question about some sorta test for any motor over 40 hp

Just got off the phone with a family member and was told some sort of test is required for any motor over 40 HP. She said one of her employes have already taken it. Ive never herd of such a law is it new this year. Thanks for you time

I had to get a coast guard certificate when I was a kid to legaly opperate our pontoon, 30hp motor.

I got screwed when they made a test for snowmobiles, I had to take the test even though i grew up on the darn things, and my buddy who is 1 year older than me, who until a few years ago never rode a sled did not have to take the test, what gives?

I hope this is a crock.

That is a new one to me!

Only thing close to that is the standard law that requires Juveniles that are under 16 years old to have a training course to operate the larger motors.

Most of these laws were passed years ago and those that were born before a certain date were exempted from having to take the course.

As you stated that exemption is not always a good thing if the person is an inexperienced operator!

I just read through the entire Boating Guide and the only thing in there about the test pertains to kids, with exception to the thing that says many boat insurance companies will give you(an adult) an insurance break for taking, passing and possessing a watercraft permit.

Personaly I think every boater should have to take a test to operate on the water.....

Evidently, Canada has a law that requires a boaters permit to operate in Ontario waters. The rules include something about individuals between 12 and 16 years of age cannot operate a boat with over 40 hp. Perhaps the Canadian test is what is being talked about.

there was talk of a required aquatic invasives species test for all boat owners. but from what I have heard from various outdoor sources this hasn't went any wheres yet. there has always been the restrictions and required permit for kids when running a boat with a motor larger then a 25HP. if this new thing was true it would have gottten alot of press time already, so I have a feeling this is not true.

I think my new Safty Measures this year will be new life jackets, Im leaning on the self inflateing kind. All the years Ive been on the water my life jackets are stowed away in the storage compartments, Hope every one has a Safe and fun Season.

Parts of Canada are starting to require a boaters safety training certificate, kind of like firearms training certificate. ( Some states require proof of taking a course before selling you a hunting license. ) It started out as a voluntary thing but becomes required for everyone after a certain date. It would not surprise me if Minnesota did something similar.

While fishing Lake of the Woods this spring it was incredible how many people don't know simple navigation rules. I bet 8 out of 10 boats were on the wrong side of the channel markers.

Ontario does have laws related to boating and safety training. If you are interested, look at the Ministry of Transportation web site for details.
