Help Me-Pflueger Reels

cliffy

Recommended Posts

I was at Scheels last night talking with one of the salesman about a new muskie set up. He suggested I try a Pflueger Trion baitcaster. I have never used any of Pfluger products....all my muskie reels are Abu. Has anyone used the Trion reel for muskies? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

I've been thinking about trying out the Tica Caimen series. 12 Ballbearings, this thing has got to me smooth, they run about $135 in the stores, but i found a place online that selld them for $99.99. I have heard good things about them...

I have not had any problems with my Abu reels but I have been using the 6500 series.......from what I have read on this message board in the past it sounded like pretty much all the muskie guys used Abu stuff....

The Trion looked nice...but would like to hear from someone that has used it....

Not sure how much the Pflueger reel runs but another excellent reel to look at is the Abu Garcia Morrum 5600 and 6600. I bought a 5600 last year and was really pleased with it, it's a work horse with a smooth feel and drag. I picked mine up brand new on hsolist pretty reasonable.

The Trion goes for around 90.00 bucks...right in my ball park. I have looked at the Morrum and it also looks nice but spendy. I am trying to keep it under 100.00 bucks.......I will have to keep my eye open for one on HSOList....

cliff. my son bought a trion last year for muskies. so far i am impressed with it. he only got to fish with it for two days ( throwing cranks, jerks and top waters). very smooth. i clean and grease all of my own reels and was very interested about the insides of this one. brass gears; the only thing i saw that was different was the spacing brackets ( they keep the gears spaced right) are a plastic. BUT they do look heavier than the thin metal one i see on most other reels.( including my 5600 black max)but,it did look very solid ! i do plan on buying one this year. del

Thanks for the info Delmuts....

The Trion looks like a nice reel and the salesperson at scheels had very good things to say...But I just wanted some feed back from people who have used one....or had info.

I guess I am a die hard Abu fan and have a hard time buying anything else...but if its a good reel, I am will go by outside of the Abu line up......

Hiya,
From what I've heard the Trions are ok. Don't know how well they hold up long term though. I'm a diehard Abu guy, but there are some reels in the abu line that just aren't meant to take the abuse of muskie fishing, especially with superlines. Big Game series 6500s (if you can find them - they discontinued them, and I'm still pretty bitter about that mad.gif ) and 7000s are pretty bullet proof. I have heard from a number of people that the Morrum's don't hold up well to muskie fishing, but haven't tried them myself.

Another good one is the Pete Maina series reel from Bass Pro. They may even be made by pflueger - they look pretty similar. I can't stand thumbars so I don't use them myself, but I know a lot of guys that do (Pete included) that like them a lot.

Cheers,
RK

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
