How many muskies per acre?

Recommended Posts

People are always telling me theres fish there you just arnt catching them. I was wondering if anyone knows "about" the amount of muskies there are in a given acre (this would be an acre where fish would be attracted, not the middle of nowhere)
just a thought. thanks

If I remember correctly I understand that the DNR shoots to manage the lakes for 1.2 Adult Musky/Muskys per acre. I may be a little off the mark but I'm pretty sure it's right around 1/acre. I would guess if you figure in the youngens you may be looking at 3 or more per acre. I have no idea what the exact numbers are and that data may be tough to find.

I dont think that there is an exact answer for that one. i think it depends on the lake your fishing, the stucture, water clarity, fish population, or maybe if baitfish on concentrated on a certian spot. everything probably plays a role in how many muskies in a particular spot. i have raised two fish from one spot, on one cast and they were only feet apart from each other on two different lakes. and one of these times these fish were in the mid 40s.then again i have caught one and with in the next couple casts in the same spot raised another fish. i have also seen photos of a musky trailin behind another while someone was catching it ( kinda like bass do sometimes). also in one of the infisherman musky vids. they talk about this exact subject and show two different fish being caught on the exact same spot only minutes apart. so the whole one fish per acre i think is a lil out there.

The 1.something fish per acre thing is an average population density used by the DNR. Just remember that you will catch 90% of the fish in 10% of the lake.

These fish will group up around the best structure, and by the FOOD. The BEST areas will change through the season, but if you know where to look, you will find numbers of fish on any given day. The first time I caught 3 fish in one day, I caught the 3 fish in about 20 minutes without moving the boat. I was actually anchored on a spot, and the fish were there.

Find the spot on the spot and you will find some fish. You need to be fishing the 1 acre that holds ten fish, rather than the 9 acres that don't.

Good Fishing!

Good point Steve,
The one fish per acer isn't to be taken litteraly as just one fish per acer. I have raised multiple fish off structure many times. In fact like Steve, I have had one of my most productive days ever
fishing primarily one spot. smile.gif

One of my clients and I boated 8 fish in a day, 6 of them off one spot. Your bound to hit it just right if you fish long enough. We had 28 follows that day including several on the spot we caught
6 fish on. smile.gif

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
