USB "hibernating"

Recommended Posts

A while back, I posted that after I left my computer for a while, my wireless keyboard / mouse would no longer work.

I tried a few things, and for a month or so now I thought that maybe it was the TV (have desktop hooked to TV) and I thought it was the signal to the TV "freezing".

I had the PC and the PS3 hooked to an HDMI switch because we didn't have enough HDMI's to plug into on the old TV.

I was thinking that when I kicked off the PS3, that maybe the signal wasn't getting back to the PC, and so it wasn't turning on the display driver.

Anyways, that's not it. We recently got a new TV and the issue is still there.

Tonight I was working on it some more, as now the only way to use the desktop is to access it through LogMeIn with the laptop or phone, or reboot the computer.

What I figured out tonight is that all of my USB's go to sleep. I have a Freegate External plugged in, and I cannot access it either once my keyboard / mouse is out.

I'm assuming that must have a power saver mode clicked somewhere on the Windows 7 Home Premium desktop, which when everything else wakes up, the USB's don't?

Well this is a new one for me, but I did find something on it. Might be worth taking a look anyways.

1 Right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Select "Properties" from the menu options.

2 Click the "Hardware" tab in the screen that is displayed. At the bottom of this window, click the "Device Manager" button.

3 Click the "USB Device" from the list of hardware devices on your computer. This expands the tree that lists a selection of drivers. Double-click the "USB Root Hub" device. This opens a new window.

4 Click the "Power Management" tab. This is where any power options are changed for the corresponding USB port. Uncheck the box that is labeled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Click "Ok" to save changes.

5 Do the same for any other "USB Root Hub" devices listed in Device Manager. Once the settings are completed, close the "Properties" window.

If it is a Dell it might need a BIOS update. We have some on campus that every now and then will not come out of hibernation. They only have USB mouse and keyboard. The only way to get them back up is to hold the power button till they shutdown and reboot.

It IS a Dell, and yes, that's the only way to get it up and running.

After doing some checking on Dell's HSOforum, there was a BOIS upgrade listed later than my build date, but when I try to run it, it just comes back that it's "the same or lower than the current version".

They are both listed as AO5.

It's a Dell Studio XP 8100 running Windows 7 Home Premium.

My BIOS was listed as Dell Inc., AO5 7/8/10.

Lastly the update was in case I wanted to add a different processor down the road. Nothing to do with the USB issue I have.

It happens on my self-built PC as well, but only once in a blue moon. Mine is old though, I never thought to look in the power save options and just assumed it was the USB controller taking a turn for the worse. I'll see what I can find.
