Is there any diffeferance in mounting a transducer for a 798 vs one for a 788?

No. Size of the transducer is the only difference, otherwise they are both going to be transom mount skimmer style transducers and they need to be in contact with the water for you to get readings.

You do need to make sure you have a clear area on either side of the transducer in order for side imaging to work properly.

Just following the instructions with your unit. I was worried about the install last year, I wanted my SI to work to its full potential, followed the instructions and it went fine. Maybe get a mounting board just in case you need to make a few minor adjustments.
