Info/Gear for getting started w/ Muskie/Lg Pike

Hi all

This is my first post in this particular forum.

Thru a set of extremely fortuitous circumstances, I have aquired the following gear so far:

2 Berkley Big Game Rods (e-glass), 1 @ 7.5', 1 @7'

Ambassadour 6500 & 6000 reels

5 muskie lures:
1 "Jake" (fire tiger)
1 "Magnum Stomper" (black w/ a couple touches of red)
2 Bucktail spinners (orange and black, yellow and black)
1 1.25 oz "Secret Weapon" spinner bait (white body, red, black and white skirt)

I've caught a number of pike over the years, but nothing more than about 5-6#, and never a muskie. Since I've now got some gear, I'd like to try using it - of course.

So - questions:
1) Is trolling legal and/or ethical in Mn for muskie? I am told that in Wisconsin its not legal.

2) What other stuff should I have? I have a camera that always goes along, and a jaw spreader, and a big pliers. I read in another post about leather gloves. What else?

3) Are there other lures I should be getting? Names, sizes, color patterns would be helpful. Also, what type of storage system to do you use for muskie sized lures.

4) What do I look for - habitat wise - for muskie - so far as the water is concerned? Weedy, etc? Depths?

5) Will I find large pike mixed in the same water as muskie, or do they stay away from each other?

6) Does a really large pike or muskie thrash about the way the smaller fish do once netted and in the boat? Caught a five
pound fish this weekend - it was not happy with me, and didn't want to pose for having its picture taken. How do you guys that get these large fish get them to be still enough
for photos/measuring?

7) Live bait? Ethical? If yes, what would I need for it?

Anything else I missed?

Thanks much.

So - questions:
1) Is trolling legal and/or ethical in Mn for muskie? I am told that in Wisconsin its not legal. It is legal in MN and considered ethical all though you may find some people that will argue. Most of Wisc it is not legal but there are exceptions.

2) What other stuff should I have? I have a camera that always goes along, and a jaw spreader, and a big pliers. I read in another post about leather gloves. What else?
Get a good mini bolt cutter, A large net is nice (rubber coated)and a long needle nose works well. If the fish is hooked badly, cut the hooks and remove the peices.

3) Are there other lures I should be getting? Names, sizes, color patterns would be helpful. Also, what type of storage system to do you use for muskie sized lures.
Try the safety pin (bass type) spinner baits made for muskie (Raddogs are one type). They work well and are easy to use.

4) What do I look for - habitat wise - for muskie - so far as the water is concerned? Weedy, etc? Depths? With fall approching, I start to concentrate on deep weeds that are green. Don't over look rocks either. Fish were other people aren't.

5) Will I find large pike mixed in the same water as muskie, or do they stay away from each other? I have caught both, but the muskie is the King.

Suprisingly the bigger they are the less thrashing they do (my experience). Hold the fish firmly with one hand under the gill plate (carefully) and support the fish with the other hand underneath and hold verically. DO NOT hold the fish vertically by it own weight as it will cause damage and possible kill the fish later. Keep the fish in the water until the camera operator is ready then take the picture quickly and get the fish back in the water.

7) Live bait? Ethical? If yes, what would I need for it? Live bait is traditionally used more in Wisc. where you can use 2 lines (one live bait the other casting). It can and is used in Mn. If you use suckers, please find out how to rig it on a quick strike rig so the hooks do not enter the fishes belly.

Anything else I missed? Take a picture and let them go. Handle them carefully and have FUN!!

get out while you can!! I started muskie fishing A few years ago and I'm not sure where it all went wrong. I just fished the muskies international tournament last week end and had a blast. Its a great way to learn from the best and what works. We fished cases lake. and I got a 38" muskie but needed a 40" to get on the board.

We had the best follows on a lure called a bull dawg.Man that thing really pulled them in for a look but no takers. I snapped the line (back lash) and lost the dawg so I went right in after it and found it. Uncle Grump I would look around the web there are some great sites just for the muskies. also check out some therapy seasons too .Metro

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
