gixxer01
F.I.L. lives on the Sauk near the new DMV. I was thinking about casting a glob of crawlers and letting them sit for a while. Curious to know if fish from a river system like the Mississippi travel up these smaller systems? We've caught smallies during the summer, but what about suckers, carp, cats, etc? He's got a small creek that dumps in on the corner of the property, would that be a decent spot to start? Not much of a river guy. All I've been told is deep holes. Any advice? This stretch usually averages about 3'-5' if that helps.
mainbutter
Definitely worth fishing, and with crawlers you can be targeting all different kinds of fish.
trappingaddiction
The Sauk can be a great fishing river. There is lots of catfish, carp, and suckers in the river. I have done best on cats of the 3.
gixxer01
It was a bust! Deepest I could find wading was 4'. Water levels were the same as mid summer. This section of river is as straight as an arrow with very little back water. Was hoping to find a section that tickled the top of the wafers, but no luck. Stick in Mud
It's full of suckers, though I haven't caught many big ones. I usually just see them as I'm wading around in the summer. The cats can be good, too. I dunno...it still might be a bit early.
Rick G
I know the section you are refering to well. Like Carmike said there are plenty of suckers. In a few weeks you should start seeing carp, northerns and even a few catfish and smallies. It's a bit early for that strech but if you wait till June or July wading will pay off . I find when the fish are present depth isn't so important, but good current breaks will be where you will find what you are looking for. rough_rider
my personal best channel catfish is from the Sauk, I was a teen so didn't get a measure on it but now that I'm an avid catfisher and routintely catch 28-30 inchers, I can safely say that beast was approx. 35 inches. During those days, we'd fill buckets of nice sized catfish. Again, I was a teen so I don't condone taking buckets of any fish especially our unofficial state fish, the catfish
