Frogs under a tip up Q.

I fish big pike on LOW, For years the standard has been either live suckers, or smelt or ciscos on harness's I make my own harness also. Now last sept. I harvested some rather large lepard frogs from a river bank an know that large pike will root up frogs in the shallows wen staging for the spawn. What wold the best type of harness to make or single style hok to use for frogs, my current harnesse's are much to big accomodating smelt an suckers up to a ft. I was think a single treble with a bead an hooking thru the top of the back or IDK, what do you guys think on this. I have no experience in circle hooks, but know some guys thats all they use even with large minnow baits. Thanks, boar

My instinct is to go with a circle hook.

I would go with a big Kahle Hook boar and hook it thru the nose of the frog. next would be a cirle hook

frogs on a tipup, thats new to me!! i'm with gordie, when using frogs for bass i always use kahles & hook em through the lips.

Thanks guys, but u realize that these frogs are dead right? Its sounds like hooking them thru the nose would be for a live frog Im looking for a hook system that dosent have a ton off harware an I have to consider that a pike will take a big smelts an swimm for a ways then stop to position it to swallo. But a frog probbaly is gone easier to just gulp down, My tip ups are gona be closer than usual because of this. I''l have to experiment. Thanks guys, Boar

Another way would be to use the big kale style hook and push the point of the hook thru the upper part of the leg then use a rubber band to hold the rest of the hook tight frogs body. Have done similar rigs on large dead suckers before quick strick rigs were so popular.

Thats good idea, Wat size kale hook would u recomend?

I guess that would depend on the size of the frogs but I would defiantly want one of the stiffer wire hooks probably in a 6/0 or a 7/0.

Another type of hook that might work would would be the plastic frog style hook and it might let you get away with no rubber band . It the hook with the little corkscrew Thimbu on it . Just a thought

Thanks gordie, I'll look into it, ive oftern thought about that hook that has two trebles with a shank of about 2 inches, I could impale the shank thru the frog an out the backside an the trebles would hug the snout, but Ive heard these types dont have very good hooking percentage, thanks again, boar

Or you could use candy corn i have heard! On frogs how about 1 in the snout and one in the rear with a 2 piece rig off a swivel?

Ha Lol, thought of that, but with just a mouth morsel of a bait to even a big pike, I'd like to keep away from as much hardware as possible, Since I make my own quick strikes I'm currently playing with just a shorter version, we"ll see. Later

I'd just use a decent size treble and use this method. Kind of a pain to take off your leader each time you need to re-bait, but could be worth it.

I've always wanted to try frogs under a tipup. I've been trying to find some frozen, but cant find them anywhere. Should have went out looking for some this fall.

Ye rivers antributaties in sept, are the best time to find em' You really get into the big ones then, grass meadows an open crp type feilds adjaent to rivers an lakes durring the summer is where youll find them at that time.
