Spearing sturgeon

So whats the point of spearing a sturgeon? I saw a picture on facebook and also a few vids on u tube of people spearing these things. Do people eat them? I just cant see the point unless you eat it. Some of the big sturgeon are really old and take a while to get really big. I would rather see them not speared like stated, unless you eat it.

Yes, absolutely they eat them. From what I hear the meat is really good too.

I compare this more to something like deer hunting than fishing.

The state of WI regulates it very closely and a small number of fish are taken out of the population each year.

I can't say it is something I would go out of my way to do, just because I have a hard time killing a huge fish like that. But I understand it's a long lived tradition with a population of fish that can sustain it.

What's the point of spearing a Northern Pike? Same Same. Sturgeon good eating. Smoked sturgeon sells for big money. Sturgeon Roe=Caviar (with a little processing)
