muskieboy46
An In-fisherman or minnesota sportsman(i dont remember which one) ariticle from last year talked about "grinders" and how they are used. I was wondering if anyone tried using them and if they caught anyhting but weeds. I tried using regular spinnerbaits and caught weeds still. I havent found any spinnerbaits that he mentioned or any that have the name grinder in them so i dont know what to use. thanks to all who reply.muskieboy
Guest
The "Grinder" is a spinnerbait created and produced by Dick Pearson. Thorne Bros. has them in four different sizes ranging from 3/4 to 3 ozs. I picked a few grinders in the last couple of days at Thorne's, but have yet to go out and use them. I will be fishing them in the next few days.Seems like these spinners would be good for the wood, especially fishing rivers.Heavy wire construction, and a short spinner arm are the ticket for fishing the wood. Brian Jones
These spinner-baits are the brain child of Tom Stygar who owns Muskie Trap Lure Co. I sold several of them for him at the Chicago Muskie Expo and put them up next to ERC Grinders, Dick and Tom are friends but hands down Tom has the better bait. If anyone wants the real deal when it comes to these baits shoot me an e-mail and I will give you Tom's contact info.------------------First Choice Guide ServiceThe Cass Lake Chainno_spam.comPhone: (612)730-no_spam

RK
Hiya,'Grinding' is a term Dick Pearson coined (at least he's the first one I've ever heard use it) to describe working a single spin spinnerbait deep through the weeds. "Grinder" is a generic term for spinnerbaits that do this task well - not all do. "Dick Pearson's Grinder" is the brand name of a bait made by Esox Research Company. It's esentally a short arm spinnerbait with a silicone skirt and a flattened bullet head that performs particularly well in heavy weeds. The bait came about when Dick asked Mike Ruff of Rad Dog Tackle Co. to make him some short arm versions of Mike's Rad Dog. Mike made a few, but didn't want to make them as a production model. So Dick asked for Mike's blessing to help ERC design a short arm spinnerbait purpose-built for grinding. Mike actually helped ERC with some aspects of it. Short arm spinnerbaits have been around the bass world since the 70s. Several tourneys have been won on Leech using them in the rice beds on Boy Bay, just to cite a local example. They get used for the same reasons for bass - they do well in the weeds and helicoptor well. When it comes to muskies, I know of several muskie anglers who've been shortening the arms on Rad Dogs and Fudally Stump Hawgs for quite a while. So to say this style bait is anyone's 'brain child' is a little generous. I've seen Tom's baits too, and they'd do very well grinding, but I don't think he'd claim to have invented the concept. As to which is the better bait, I bet they both catch plenty of fish this season...Cheers,RK
