2002 Saturn SL2 - Sputtering under load

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a 2002 Saturn SL2, 1.9 DOHC, Auto, with 113,xxx miles on it. Yesterday it started sputtering pretty bad when I am trying to accelerate. It also seems to do it a bit when idling at a stop light. When driving a constant speed there are no issues, but if I try to accelerate to pass someone or have to go up hill, it seems to act up again.

To note, the secondary air injection system is messed up and trips the SES light but I have been told by a couple of mechanics that the secondary air injection system is only used during initial startup. Are they blowing smoke and it could be causing the issue?

The car does burn a little oil, about 3/4 of a quart through 3000 miles.

Could the injectors possibly be doing this? I replaced the fuel filter at about 95,000 miles, so that should be good. I also did plugs and wires about 90,000 miles. Tonight when I get home I will pull the plugs to see if any are fouled out.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks Jeremy.

Beings I had changed them out 25k ago, I didn't even think of plugs and wires. The old Taurus was doing the same thing a couple years ago, you said the same thing and that fixed it. Hopefully it is that simple, and I bet it is. I will report back when the job is done. Thanks again.

Most certainly plugs, well one in particular.

Question is, what would cause a failure of the plug to that extreme. I used a light and mini mirror and couldn't find any bits of the plug in the cylinder, but I want to find a scope cam to take a better look.

Also, experienced just a bit of rough idle when at stoplights in with the car in drive this morning. Wasn't major but you could tell it was happening if you paid attention.

Thanks again Jeremy.

I don't know what plugs those are but they didn't belong in your car! I hope you used the correct plug this time?

I'm wondering if that cylinder is running lean or if the plug was defective?

was the boot on the wire burnt up also? kind of looks like maybe the plug was loose?

The plug was a bit loose in there. I thought I had done plugs on the car earlier, but was mistaken. I put them in my old Taurus about the same time this car had 90k. It was my wife's old car that I adopted after she got a new one a few weeks back. Couldn't remember which car I did what to when I was typing the original post.

Yeah, standard AC Delco copper plugs in there now. The boot wire was not burned like that from what I could tell.

It was garbage day today and I threw the plugs and wires in the can. I shoulda kept em a little longer to take another look.

Still having issues, going to pull the plug again to check if it is fouled. Also going to do a compression test on it. Buddy is coming over with a scope cam Saturday to take a look as well. Hearing an occasional knock. Thinking part of that plug may have damaged a valve. Located a couple complete heads for 100 bucks or so. Just hope the cylinder isn't scored. Wish me luck.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
