outdoor edge knives

Looking at the butcher lite. I know with a knife you get what you pay for. Not looking to break the bank but have some quaility to it. Has anyone used them? Im thinking a few knives and a saw would be nice. But they need to hold an edge.

Use is Im planning an elk hunt for the fall of 2013, and need to start my research and buying so I dont break the bank trying to get it all last minute.

The other thing is putting and edge on em. I can put an edge on knives at home. but what do you use for in the field for a touch up or will i need to completely resharpen?

I have the butcher light set and for what i use it for it works well. Granted they aren't the same quality of higher price knives but they do hold an edge well and feel comfortable in the hand. I have used the fillet/boning knife the most and it is now my favorite fillet knife. The one issue is that there isn't much of a point on it for doing really tight cuts or getting through skin. The set should have a sharpener in it that works well.

Never tried the Outdoor Edge knives, but the best knife I've found for the money is the Mora swedish knives - they're in the lower price range, and they have good steel in them and hold an edge. Get a commercial grade diamond coated sharpening steel to touch up the edge.

I have a knife like that also Jonny but it is a Sharade and I got it a Wild Rice Days in Deer River totaly love it. they dont make the one I have any more but I found some over stock on the web.

Do you use that for furbearers also?

Thanks Jonny thats what I was really intrested in was those knives I have a couple that belonged to grandpa also I think one I a Barlow and the other is a Old Timer that is almost wore out but it still would serve the purpose is the need arises.

Thanks guys. My plan was to bring a small stone and retractable diamond steel with me in my pack to sharpen if need be. I would be unhappy if I had a pack full of dull knives, (no matter the quality) 3 miles from the truck where the sharpener is.

I Have always used a stone and the one I have I have had for 16-18 yrs but I found a nice new sharpener and I got it off the snap on guy. Its one of those pull type sharpeners and the cutting edges are carbide and let me tell you it really works great.

I am almost converted to this solely but I have a hard time given up the old stone as I have had great success with it.

This carbide style sharpener is light weight and packs so much easier than the stone so it always is with me on trips.

I have taken dull butter knife sharp knives and turned then into razors edge knives with this carbide sharpener

    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
