How to make a Digger Auger Carrier quick release?

Mike Stark

Recommended Posts

I got a Digger Auger Carrier this year and it has worked flawlessly. I put it to the test on Lake Winnipeg a couple weeks ago and had ZERO issues.

The only problem is that I can not use my trailerable cover for my snowmobile with it mounted on the sled.

I am trying to think of a way to make it easier to take on and off the sled. Right now it is mounted with bolts and lock nuts.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Mike

I have the same hitch installed on a 2-up polaris touring sled. I have it mounted to the grab bar on my sled, just like the picture on their HSOforum.

With the rack on there, my cover doesn't go down over the grab bar like it normally would, but I haven't had any trouble just pulling it down to the grab bar (right behind the tail light).

Get a scrap piece of U channel that will slip over the auger mount. Mount the U channel on the sled with bolts and drill 7/16" holes through the channel and the auger mount, use 7/16" pins to secure the auger mount into the U channel.

Wingnuts?

I was thinking about wing nuts. The only issue I see with with wing nuts is having them rattle loose. There is a lot of vibration on the front of the sled. Would something like lock tight work to keep them secure?

I am in the process of designing something for my ATV. Key is that my AC ATV has "speedrack" attachment points. These are similar to receiver hitches on your truck. The part I need to figure out is where to get the tubular steel to fit the ID of the receiving points on my rack. Once I have that I will have this figured out really well. It will plug right in and I can pop it back off by pulling a couple pins. The nice part is I will then have 100% full use of my front rack, which now I have a different auger mount which takes up the whole dang thing.

This is the idea I was getting at for a sled too. Though on the sled you have to fab up a female and male end for it to work. To be effective I think you would want it to slide in at least two points to provide proper support.

Capt, i have an AC with the speedrack, and i just use this AC tool holder. It slips right into the speedrack (front or back). I put mine on the back and put a shovel and my auger in it. Both strap down with the velcro. The "U" shape holder flexes and can be reshaped to hold the auger. Works fantastic. Give it a try!

I dont think locktite will do the trick. But, if you have a pliers on you, or keep one in the truck, you can snug them that last 1/8 a turn pretty tight, and use the pliers to loosen them when done. Easier than a wrench most likely.

Hey that looks really good. I may just do that. Anyone want to buy an unused digger mount? Lol i just bought it last week cuz it was on sale.

Yeah, its pretty slick. Then in the summer I use it for shovels, axes, etc.

Here are a couple pics with the auger in it.

Will that mount on the front rack the same? I have a trv with the cruiser box on the back so no rack.

You can either buy the holders seperately ( so they mount on the existing bars) or the holders with the speedrack bar that slides into those speedrack holes. If u have the speedrack mounts on the front, then it will work.

Graingers has a ton of these kinds of knobs call T or Star knobs for only a few bucks ea. I'm sure you can go on their site and search for the biggest one that you think would tighten easily by hand and have it shipped to you. I would get three so you have a spare. wink

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
