The one you have will work perfect, You will want to put some super line on it. Power Pro, Tuff Line, or anything like that. The super line is tough stuff, you can get the 80# test and it will be the diameter of 12# mono line, and has very low stretch. One thing I was told was to put a mono backing on the reel. I have two Abu 6500's a C3 and a C4, I put 60# Power Pro on both of them, but first I backed them with 20# mono. By doing this you won't need 200+ yards of super line to fill the reel, and getting the reel full is very important as it will make for longer and easier casting. I'm sure you will get more specific info so some of the others guys out here, man, I'll tell ye they know their stuff. I just started targeting the Muskies last year and between this site and a few others and not to mention time on the water I feel I have learnned alot, psot all the questions you have knowledge is wealth out there.

Also, if you put on superbraid without backing with mono first, the line often just slips around the spool, making you think your drag isn't working right.

Found that one out the hard way. blush.gif

I agree with RuKiddingMe on the superlines. One note. Since superlines have virtually no stretch, if you're not careful you can break a stiff graphite rod on the hookset, because stiff rods have for years depended on the stretch of mono to cushion the shock.

Nowadays they make rods with softer tips, which help that problem, and a soft tip with a stiff butt is a good rod to have anyway for big fish.

Have a blast!

Rukiddingme and Steve haven given you the best advice there is when it comes to lines and rods. I myself use 80 lb Tuf Line. I user a heavier line weight because of rocks an reeds. Both rocks and reeds are very hard on the line.

Good Luck in the coming year!

Hey new guy,
I use 65lb tuff line and Powerpro formy rigs but I don't use a mono backing.
I just put a pice of duct tape around the spool, after the first few feet of line are attached. That will keep your line from slipping on the reel. smile.gif
