The contours won't be as accurate as the Navionics app, but you could try out the DNR Lakefinder App which is free.

If you have any other questions be sure to check out the Computer and Electronics forum further down the page for more info that might help with your new phone.

Pay the money and buy navionics. Or you can just be a cheap ace and buy a android phone, pay 80 bucks a month and not spend the few extra dollars to have sweet gps navigation that will put you on that drop off where the huge eyes hang out,

without having to drill 16 holes with your 1999 jiffy 10inch auger you are to cheap to buy new blades for.

Better Maps? Hard to say. But, if you already have a smartphone then you get a better and larger screen with the same maps that IMHO is much easier to navigate. The phone GPSr will not be quite as good as some handheld GPSr's, but good enough for most people. Most people with a smartphone already carry it, so it's not another thing to carry, and will probably have a decent camera built in, too.

If I were to choose between buying a handheld and map chip OR starting a new contract and purchasing a phone specifically to do this, get the handheld. You get a lot of other functions with the smartphone, though, but you will have a minthly fee tied to it.

I have a handheld with the Lakemaster maps and a smartphone with the navionics. I like to compare between the 2 when it comes to looking for spots. So far, I have been more impressed with the Navionics maps.

Darn I thought this post was going to help me with my addiction to angry birds. But the only useful apps lake wise Ive found for the android are the mn dnr lakefinder and navionics app. As far as pin pointing you on a spot goes i still perfer my handheld with a lm chip. 2c
