Fishing Kauai

Hi All,

We're going to Kauai in a couple months and are looking into a fishing charter. Have researched a few and come up with a small list of what look to be good outfits.

We're staying in Poipu, and it's looking like the south/west side is very favorable. Looking at doing a 4-person private charter.

Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with any charters? Any opinions or advice?

Thanks!

My wife & i did a half day charter on our honeymoon back in 05. We were on a 4 person charter. It was a blast. The boat we were on let us keep enough fish for one meal. We didn't take them up on that offer as we were staying in a hotel & had no way to cook. I know some restaurants will allow you to bring in your own fish and they will prepare it for you.

I think most of the charters leave from the same bay, which is close to the airport. It is not a bad drive from Poipu bay.

I thought the 1/2 day charter was plenty. we caught a great variety of fish and my arms were plenty tired after 4.5 hours of fishing. Have fun!

I fished with Ohana in February 2010 and they were incredible. Captain Lance was awesome company. He offers shared trips along with private trips. Full or half days available. We caught enough fish on a 4 hour trip and he let us keep 1 tuna which fed my family of 4 and a few people hanging around the pool. He will work extremely hard for you and he's reasonably priced. I do plan on seeing him again someday but I will recommend him to anyone I can. Not sure how this HSOforum works for posting links but since this guy isn't giving anyone that sponsors this site any competition here goes. http://fishingcharterskauai.com/ When the fishing slowed down he had a technique he called dropping rocks I believe. He said it's an old way of fishing from hundreds of years ago and the bigger boats don't spend time on it. We caught 3 yellowfin using this technique and it was awesome. Like vertical jigging but much larger scale. If I can figure out how to post pictures I will. Hope you give him a shot!

Last January we fished with Deep Sea Fishing Kauai on Capt. Jude Schwarze's 31 Bertram with his crew Justin and Rob. It was a tough bite. We only ended up landing 2 20# class Yellowfin Tuna but lost a couple others. The bite was slooooow. The crew was excellent and the equipment was also good. Mostly Tiagra 50,80, and 130's. No belt or hardness...all bent butt rods on the rail *ick*. They let us have enough Tuna filets to feed the 5 of us for 2 nights. Overall I was happy with the charter and the crew was fantasic especially considering there were two non-fisherman onboard in my group. I'd probably charter them again if I was ever in Kauai but it's not a place I'd want to go to do any sort of serious fishing unless I was wealthy and real serious about going after a grander. Give him a call and see what he has to offer compared to the other charters. He was recommended to me by someone on a global saltwater board. He's a very personable guy and right out of Port Allen which is on the south side not far from Poipu. http://www.deepseafishingkauai.com/index.html
