FishOrDiecasting
Hey guys! I'm Aaron. I've had a few profiles on here throughout the last 5 or 6 years, but never posted much. Forum fright,I guess you call it. Anyway, I was really looking forward to the Get to Gator this year, but had prior commitments. Sooo...heading up to the Third River on Wednesday, and have NO idea what to expect. This will be my first time on Dixon, but I have speared since I was 3 or 4 with Dad. I am taking my 3 oldest daughters,14y,11y,and 3yrs up there. I was wondering if I could get any tips from you folks at all to make this a great trip! Any certain decoy color?...teasers?..water clarity?..heck, even best time of day would be appreciated! Oh, my girls LOVE to chase flags! Is it frowned upon to set tip-ups in the same area as the spear shacks? Thanks in advance, and good luck on the ice this year!
Gordie
First off Welcome to HSO (Sort of) Glad you decided to start posting If you look back on the GTG posts mostly the recap of it you should find plenty of tips on color and teasers. I think you will have no problems with throwing out some tip ups If those girls are having fun thats al that matters. I have had good luck up there with red and white and chartuse green and red for colors . I know that each time outr seems to be a different color or different trick that helps you get them close but if you jig daredevil/ spoons on a spearate rod along side a live decoy that works well and if you can get that spoon to spin you really be in bussiness. Some of these other guy I'm sure will chime in with there thoughts Have fun and Good luck Dont forget to take a bunch of pictures and post them back here if you have troubles with that let us know will help you out
MJ1657
It's basically a big flat out there so its not hard to find a spot. Clarity was real good last week. It wasn't as clear as last year but its not a problem at all.
Laska
Clarity is 7-9ft, id reccommend going straight out from the landing by dixons rentals, pretty sure bns n I saw th most numbers of fish, seemed when I was there bigger fshwere taken in the afternoon but I saw the most numbers in the AM. I only frown on tip ups whn there within 20ft of my spearhouse and there not mine! Lol makes sense right... firetiger decoys seemed to bring in the most fish I'm sure that a spinner with a firetiger daredevil would do the same for the most part. Red and white seemed to have the least amount of action but I wouldn't count it out tho. There is a deeper weedline out from the landing that I found one I found it I saw plenty of fish.Hope this helps,Laska
FishOrDiecasting
Great stuff guys! I almost always rely on a red and white..not sure where to even find a firetiger, but I have some daredevils for open water that are the right color, just need to work on getting them to spin! Maybe I'll just paint an old Duey's or something?
FishOrDiecasting
Well. We just got back from our spearing trip up to the 3rd River. My daughter caught a 20" dink on a wax worm and jig...but that was the ONLY pike we saw! We managed some real nice 'Gills and decent Perch, but the word on the lake was the Northerns slowed WAY down just before we arrived. In fact, the afternoon before we pulled in, a kid nailed a 38". Certainly no fault of Dixon Lake Resort, but it was a long, expensive trip for panfish! I really wish I would have bit the bullet and came up for the GTG! LOL!
