Hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable fishing season so far..I just picked up my brand new strikemaster 3 HP Solo ice auger, and was wondering if there was anything that I should be doing to it as far as breaking it in or is this bad boy ready to rock right out of the box...? I just want to make sure that I am doing everything right for this piece of equipment. If I could hear some of your thoughts on this it would be very much appriciated...Thanks

Someone can sure correct me if I'm wrong but with the advances in modern day technology and the quality of parts and oils, breaking in is almost a thing of the past. I've heard with 2 strokes that adding some extra oil during that first tank gives some the extra insurnace but probably isen't as big as deal today. with 4 strokes, some will give a early oil change then recomended but again, not aa big issue today.

Maybe a motor head can chime in hear but this is what I've been getting when I bought my new boat, atv, and truck within the last few year...

Just do proper maintenance and keep those blades fresh or sharpe.

Good luck and enjoy a great auger with even a greater company!

I picked up the same model as you this year. Try to find 91 octane non-oxygenated (no ethanol basically) fuel. I'm using this with Amsoil Saber at 50:1 which is the ratio recommendation for the Solo. After I got mine filled up I started it in the drive way and let it run for about 5 minutes idling then revved it up and down a few times. Is this necessary? I have no idea but I did just to make sure everything was cherry before I hit the ice.

Oh and when you do start to drill holes...brace yourself because this thing is a monster!

There are so many schools of thought on breakin procedure. Some guys (more so with 2 strokes than 4) would say "break it in how you plan to use it" others will baby it for a while.

Just run a little more oil through the first tank and dont worry about it. Has worked for me with everything from weed trimmers, to augers, to snowmobiles.

Guys I know have a very specific and very successful breakin procedure for their augers. Fot the first hour of operation they run them indoors to give the engine warm air, the second hour they run them on the lake while lying on their back and holding the auger above their head pointing it to the sky. This will allow the auger to get the power of Greyskull. After that begin drilling holes. These guys did this and have been running the augers for years with no problems and I have seen many people on their backs running the augers on the lakes breaking them in.

Nice seasock, but you forgot the most important part of your break in process. The extra lubricant needed. Crown Royal! whistle
