Winnie or URL?

Planning a day trip tomorrow but cannot decide on Winnie or URL. I have never fished either. I am well equipped and am able to fish a lot of water quickly. Anyone have any thoughts on where I should try? Also, since I have zero experience on these sheets of ice, does anyone have any advice how I should attack either one of them? Not looking for spots, just looking for a way to increase my time with a line or two down the hole. Thanks again for any advice.

Red. You can drive out from all the resorts. Up along the east and north shore people are pulling wheel houses around with full size trucks as of this weekend. The walleye bite has been good too. More hit than miss up to this point. Seems like Winnie will let you you down if you go expecting to pop walleyes all day long. Red has been pretty consistant so far.

For a newbie to either lake, I would suggest Red. Winnie can be very intimidating on where to start where Red is fairly straight forward. But both would be good options for a trip.

If you have a GPS and a wheeler hit Winnie. If not you might want to do whats obvious and hit Red. If you go to Winnie find some structure and fish away from others. There is so much structure on that lake there is no reason to fish by other people. If they aren't hammering move.

It depends how you like to fish. If you just enjoy plopping down and waiting for fish to pass through, head to Red. If you are like me, and enjoy running and gunning, finding structure, fishing it, and moving on, go to Winnie. I can see how people enjoy fishing Red, but for me, it is way too boring. I'll take Winnie any day of the year. Both are great fisheries.

I'd recommend red lake right now. like others have said, its a little easier to get on fish up there. winni has a lot of structure and you need to put some time into finding the fish you ice if you have never been there. plus i've heard that red is doing pretty decent yet, winni has been so-so. my two cents.

Thanks for the tips. I do have all the needed gadgets to find structure, on Winnie, but I think I am going to give Red a shot. I will save Winnie for another day. Maybe next week. Thanks again for the advice.

You were fishing it when the walters were off limits and the population was crashed. I've had honest 75 fish days on Red in the recent years.

I saw the same post.. I graduated BSU in 95, I remember the days back in 91-92 where it could be a dead sea.. but 2003? Its a TOTALLY different fishery now. TOTALLY!

For me it's either hit Red on the fly, but if I have the time and can plan it out I'd blow by Washkish and race to LOW. I like the liberal limits and it too is way more consistant than Winnie as far as walleyes go.
