I used 17# and 20# cheap mono on mine for backing and it worked good. I think any line would be ok just make sure to wind it on tight and flat and almost fill up the spool that way it will reel up the most line per turn of the handle.

Make sure you have backing and fill that spool to the top. You get better pick up with a larger arbor (more line on the spool) with each turn of the reel. Backing is up to you, preferably something that doesn't slip. I have braids behind my line for fill and roughness.

You can use anything you want to fill the spool up. I have used yarn in the past with electrical tape over the top and right now I have 40lb mono that was pulled off my trolling rods. I would not worry about fastening the line with a blood knot. I usually just put one of the pony spools on and that is probably overkill. Half a spool would be plenty.

the thing I heard from Jack Baker(NAIFC Touny director) was to put a layer of flexible foam around the arbor and then run a piece of clear tape around that to prevent the line from cutting the foam. I plan to try the foam I use when I build RC airplanes. it is flexible and come in 1/4 or 1/2 inch thickness. I plan to cut a piece to the correct width and length and try that.

Brad, i tried the window insulating strips and clear tape, but for some reason the line likes to slide along the side of the foam and down onto the spool. Not sure how I will try and fix this problem yet, I kinda wish the flyreel was a level wind now to make the line go on evenly! lol

what about going a hair wider and letting it go up the sides of the reel a little making a little bowl like area so the line cant get along the side or even for that matter try to run the tape alittle up the side.

The finished backing should ideally saddle in the middle. It helps keeps your line from going into the sides of the spool. Better is to use like 6-10# test mono as a second filler and fill in the sides of the spool and smooth everything out before you put your 2# line for fishing.

I used electrical tape and paracord on one reel after 2 years of putting backing on and then taking it off for summer. Works fine and took less time than before.

Play with the positioning of your reel with your gloves/mitten on before taping it on. The feel is quite different from a normal reel.

I use to just fill the reels with flyline backing then add 50 ft of mono or flourcarbon. And it works just fine, only drawback was how much backing you needed to use.

Now I cut strips of craft foam to fill the spool a good 3/4's+ of the way then add a bit of backing, then my line im going to use for fishing...

You can buy these foam sheets at about any craft store for about 50 cents...

Cut the strips so they wrap all the way around and just touch end to end.

Then a little piece of electrical tape to hold them.

I cut the strips a tad narrower than the spool width. Unless you are super precice with your cuts, the line is going to work its way along side the foam. Might as well make a bit of room for it to happen...

Now fill things up with some backing...

With the SLV's I have never had the line work under the spool. I usually just put my mono/floro in the middle of the spool and didnt worry about it. I like the idea of putting on the line to form a depression in the middle of the spool though... cool

Is that a black SLV? I do mine the same way but i even out the top of the backing with 20lb mono so my little 2lb mono wont dig into the backing. and I can make the saddle in the middle.
