Handheld GPS units?

Who makes the maps that get put in to the garmin handhelds?

There are still some Garmin Lakemaster cards / cd's out there as time goes on they will get tougher and tougher to find since they are not being made anymore.

Garmin released a new map about a month ago call Upper Midwest Fishing Guide, this map covers 7 states and over 9500 lakes, Minnesota included. You won't have a problem finding this map.

I like the fact with handheld GPS's that the batteries last longer, if I need batteries a couple AA batteries are easy to find, it is more rugged that a phone, don't have to worry about it getting wet, and usually the reception is better (especially in covered areas like in forests).

tip_upclyma, I also have the Navionics app for my smartphone. Its a good tool to get you close to a certain spot on any given lake. The only problem with it is that it doesn't go into detail near as much as a LakeMaster does...the downside to that is that you pay a pretty price for it.

i just picked up a garmin 1450lmt (car gps) and the garmin upper midwest fishing guide. it's my first ever gps so i have nothing to compare it with, but it seemed pretty accurate. i was out on sunday and drilled about 50 holes and all the depth were right on, minus a foot or so, but was consistent with the depth change.

i used it to tell me exactly where to go to find the boat launch and then carried it with me to the spot on the lake that i wanted to fish. very convenient. only issue that i have with it is that the unit is not water proof, but worked fine on sunday with the rain. just put a zip lock bag over it.

I would keep plenty of air in the bag. I dropped mine in a lake north of Ely two weeks ago. Luckily, I had enough cabela's points and GCs to replace it, so all it really cost me was the maps. I got the same map set and it looks awesome. I've been thinking about getting the WI maps for a while and now I get them plus Rainy which I fish a couple times a year.

I have the Garmin Oregon 400 w. a Lakemaster chip, was not aware that they dont do chips for Garmin anymore, and at $130, can't see why not, ouch! I was hoping there would have been something for the smartphone but there wasn't. $500 later, (Garmin and Chip), Navionics came out with the app for smartphone, which is great when you have reception. Together, they are awesome tho, you can compare maps from both vendors. I bought the Garmin for deer hunting drives originally and love it..
