Jiffy Propane Auger Review

Today was my first outing with the 9 inch propane Jiffy auger. Overall I am happy with the auger. Some of the things I noticed are:

GOOD

Starting is awesome. 2 pulls tops

No chokes, vents or fluids to deal with

Very low emissions

BAD

Throttle control is very cheap and sticks. Would benefit from a little better quality.

Auger can only lay on one side and it is the narrow handle side. Very hard to keep it there pulling out on a sled

All in all I am happy with the auger. How about you guys?

Well I had a chance to use mine today and I'm not very happy at all. I tried this unit at home and it seemed to work fine. I decided to take a long drive up towards Leech and when we arrived I was able to drill 1 hole. After that I could get it started one other time long enough to drill a hole.

I would love to hear suggestions on what might fix my issue.

I tried a new tank of propane and checked the oil and still nothing.

I will be checking with the big C to see what the return policy is and grab a gas one if I can't resolve this issue.

Well that stinks!

I too just bought a 9" pro4. So far I've only run it in the garage.

Need gas, and need spark. I'd check spark first.

For gas, I guess I'd call up Jiffy tech for that and see what they have to say. I've heard they are great.

I sure hope your problem is something simple. I haven't heard much bad about these augers but now you have me a bit worried!

Good luck, let us know what comes of it.

The one thing I can think of is that the metal on the fitting shrunk in the cold and there is a leak somewhere. I thought about taking the fittings apart and adding some Teflon tape to them.

Another thing is maybe there is a bad fuel reg on it?

There site says DO NOT RETURN IT TO RETAILER. Call Us. Really and ship it back to you and be stuck not ice fishing for the next 3 weeks?

It really sucked that I got to kind of wet my whistle today!

I'm guessing mine is just a fluke deal because I've heard nothing but good things. I'm just annoyed.

Ran mine for first time yesterday plus today. I'm very pleased with it. Starts first pull. Cuts very well. I've only been on 6" of ice so far. As mentioned earlier the only negative is you have to transport/store with the lp tank pointing up and this is the narrow side of the handles which brings the center of gravity higher. I'll have to bunge cord it while hauling in my pick-up. Probably have to modify my ATV auger holder somehow to give good support in the proper position. I have Mad Dog auger supoorts that worked great on my old Jiffy model 30.

Ran mine for the first time on the ice. Starts with two pulls at first then one after that every time. Drilled a bunch of holes in 8" of ice and boy does it really rip through, much better than my old 2hp jiffy. Certainly quieter than a two stroke and no exhaust fumes to worry about.

There are a few things that could be improved though. So far I don't care for the cover for the blades, the old clamshell and rubber band was better than the metal springs that they use now. I'm not sure if I should worry about the plastic gearbox and the throttle is cheap and on the wrong side.

But it does everything that I wanted it to so I'm quite happy with it. BTW does anyone know the hp of it?

A full seson with mine...I love it. A little heavy yes, but I knew that coming in. Starts first pull, ran fine in sub zero temps, cuts great. I got the 10 inch and it cuts as fast as any auger I've used.

I've read every thread I've seen about them and this one has the most trouble mentioned I've read to date. Maybe I just got lucky?? Nah...that never happens!!

Went back out to the perm shack this morning, which is still in my driveway to finish some wiring. Thought I would try to start the auger again. Wouldn't start. Then checked the 1 lb tank that I just put on last night and only had 5 minutes runtime on it. Turns out the tank was now empty. Is this faulty auger or do I have to remove the tank each time?

It's to bad to hear about the guys who are havin trouble with theirs... I just bought one this year and is by far the best auger i have used!! First day i got it put the #1 pound propane tank on it and haven't taken it off.. It's been on for about a month now and i know it's early ice but have probably ripped of 50-60 holes at least.. Haven't run out..

I will admit you do have to be carful to make sure you have it sitting up right because a friend of mine didn't and it dripped out a couple oz of oil...

As far as for the Jiffy company, they are extremely good to work with and if you explain your troubles and how inconvienent it is at this time usually they are fast to fix it and will usually throw something else in! smile

Mine is in the back of my truck right now ready to be brought back to the big C. Maybe I will give them a call and see what they say. Talked to the C and they said returns for augers are 60 days but that was over the phone so who knows what happens when I actually show up with it.

Well I just talked to a lady at Jiffy and asked her if there is anything I can do or if this is a common issue and she just told me that I would be better off returning it and exchanging it for a new one at the big C.

Really? You think I'm going to pick up another one after this awesome customer service? That was weird.

i had a similar issue when i was on the lake last year. after looking at the gas line, there was a hair line crack,,,thus causing me to have a hardtime starting and loosing propane. i guess what really caused it was that after each usage i would remove the tank and tuck the fitting away. not much flex there. this year, i'm just gonna disconnect it and not undo the tank. check it out.

Called Jiffy tech service on Monday morning and described the problem. Tuesday morning (today) they called back and said they are sending me a new power head via Speedy Delivery and that Speedy would also pick up the "old" head from me. Should see them Wed or Thurs. Sounds like good customer service to me.

Hopefully the new head works out of the box and away we go!

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.

    • Or he could go with leech~~~~~
    • Bear can relate too. Tell Leech to start a new account named Leech5, we'll know who he is.If he has any trouble, Bear can walk him through it.
