1st Double of the year and a single!

Recommended Posts

The streak is still alive. Two nights in a row I've come back with fur in the truck.

1st set: Was a dud. Saw and heard nothing at this new spot.

2nd set: I set up on the North side of a plowed field on the South edge of a weedy fence line. Wind was from the West. There was a swamp to the SE and a woodlot to the South of me.

I put my decoy and caller SW of me about 50 yards out on top of a little hill. I started with some distress on and off for about 15 minutes then sat back and watched. 10 minutes later I gave 2 howls and hardly got the call out of my mouth when I see one comeing straight at me from the South.

It got about 100 yards out and started heading downwind of the caller. I stayed on him and when he stopped at 65 yards I hammered him. Here's how he layed.

I switched to pup distress and soon saw another one bust out from the same spot and head directly to the decoy. It stopped at 30 yards and looked at it and the must have seen something it didn't like and bolted. It ran about 130 yards and stopped broadside and it sent a round it's way. It spun and then ran 40 more yards and piled up. Agian two with perfect hides as well. Here's the two together.

3rd set: I did a drive by and checked it out first. It was a North/South field about 250 yards across withwoods on both sides. It looked like the farmer had just spread manure right down the center. The field sloped up in the back with more woods and a swamp South of that. I parked across the street on the North side of the road. I walked along the West woodedge about 100 yards from the road and stopped when 2 coyotes lit up South of me. They barked for quite a while and I probably should have just turned around and left but I figured ,what the heck and set up anyway.

Winds still out of the SW. I put the decoy 30 yards SE of me and gave it 10 minutes and began with two long howls. Immediately the two from earlier started barking agian but this time they were West of me about 3/8 mile. I gave it a bit and howled agian and noticed one charging in from the SE. It crossed turd alley and stopped faceing me. I centered the dot on his chest and squeezed it off. It looked like he did a somersault and then continued to roll toward me and then lay still. I switched to pup distress but nothing else showed. Here's the big guy as he layed.

I tried one more spot near the house but wasn't much into it. I was cold and every time I blinked my eyes didn't wan't to open agian. So I called it after a short set and headed home. Here's the group photo.

Here's #5,6 and 7 for me for the year and Mitch will be hunting with me the next two nights so hopefully I can get his picture up here with a couple. I think it's supposed to get warmer so it should be a good night out there. I have the heater thawing out their muzzles so hopefully there ready to skin. Good luck to everyone ventureing out tonight.

Very Nice Dogs there Grayfox.

I went out on friday night myself for the first time doing a night hunt. I had one talk back to the e-caller but never saw one. It was awesome just to get a reaction going out for the first time.

Hopefully soon I can get my first coyote
