How does lure weight affect rods?

I have always noticed the suggested lure weight on the ice rods, but what does that mean? Does the weight of the lure get affected by the action of the rod. I have always wondered and know I am asking! Thanks

You want to have real control over your jigs, or lures. If your jig is bending your rod significantly, it is acting like a shock absorber as you try to jig up and down. You don't have the control needed to move the jig just a little bit, then a whole lot quickly.

Taking into consideration the combinations of rod, line, lure weight, application, and conditions will make your set-ups more effective. It makes a huge difference. That's why we all carry around so many dang set-ups. Plus the research and analysis is fun.

Not an expert here by any means but here is what I believe.

One needs to have a proper action rod for the size and specie they are targeting.

If we are say jigging for eyes with a panfish rod, the weight of the lure will be to heavy for the tip and action of the rod and the rod is not designed to catch fish over the rating of the specie.

Then again, if we are targeting say gills or crappie with a stiffer action rod and a very light lure or jig, the rod tip will not tell one if they have been hit by the fish as the tip and action throughout the blank will not show any signs of a bite.

If one does not pay enough attention to the weight and action of the rod, a lure too heavy can cause problems. In a worst scenerio, the rod tips and tip guides could break when exceeding the lure rating of the rod by alot of excess weight on the tip or guides.

The great thing about todays rods is that they have built them to target each specie and for thier size and technique of fishing.

An online search might give you alot of added information on how and why the rods are designed the way they are.

Many more options today versus when I started with a stick with a point on the end and you hand lined all your fish in.

Heck we still caught fish but not like today.
