TB had a full display of what they call their "Custom Production" rods. The were taking orders for a uniquely custom rods for the exact same show price of 10% off. I took this as a rare opportunity to get a custom rod at a discount so I bit the bullet on a noodle and they should have it ready before Christmas.

Custom is build for you, hand built production is for everyone. There is nothing custom about a rod you can buy off the shelf.

I build my own custom rods with the blank, handle, reel seat, guides, hook keeper, thread wraps and decals that I want.

Taking nothing from TB, I know they build awesome rods, but their "custom production" seems like "new and improved", which one is it?

I've purchased blanks from them to build rods for family because they love their blanks, and rightfully so, they are great blanks.

You can call Matt or Lonnie at TB's and tell them what you want and they will build it to your specs. They are very helpful in getting you the rod built for your application.

They do have a very nice lineup of both self rod's and custom made.

You should educate yourself before you type. Yes they have custom rods that have become their most popular request orders on the shelf. Like posted above you can have Lonny build whatever you want in a CUSTOM ROD!! Just read their internet site and you could have not assumed what you had typed!!

Did I ever say they don't build custom rods? That's right, I didn't.

Now who needs the education?

I was referring to the "custom production". AS I stated, a custom rod is built for you, not a rod built for the shelf.

Read through the post before you shoot off next time.

I guess I wouldn't really call what you described as "custom".

You're just taking off the shelf parts and assembling them yourself.

When I hear "custom" I'm thinking one-off, meaning you have the only one.

I assure you that the T.B. rods off the shelf, and those you order with a specific handle, wrap color, length, guide selection and hook keeper or not are just as high quality. If you want it to be one of a kind, the best way is to use it and get some minnow juice and fish slime on it.. crazy

What are you talking about? You can call Lonnie then request what you ever you want. You don't have to pick on off the shelf. They will build a rod for you only you if you want, what part of that don't you understand? What part of that is not custom?

you two are funny!

Maybe you BOTH need to read your own posts! ones arguing about "custom production" and ones arguing that they also do "custom custom" too!

Who cares what its called. "Most" all "custom" rods are not true to just yours, they have multiples out their.

on a side note...Gaustin makes a great "custom" rod though you may find a bunch of people with them as weell! grin

The word "custom" can have several meanings and indeed every Thorne Bros rod is hand-built. Not a single one of our rods goes into a machine to be built so there is no "factory" involved. The term "custom" indeed applies directly to Thorne Bros rods… as there are no other rods like Thorne Bros and Thorne Bros is one-of-a-kind. There is only one Thorne Bros store and only one Thorne Bros custom rod line out there. Exclusivity can sometimes be deemed as custom.

One GIANT "custom" feature that no one else can claim... All of Thorne Bros ice rod blanks are made in the USA to the same standards as the fiberglass and carbon fiber/graphite materials used for NASA space shuttles... only the best!

I think were the confusion lies is the difference between buying one already built on the shelf or "special ordering" one with someone in the rod shop to your exact specs. We still label all of our rods as "custom" but you have the choice to "special order" one and take it to the next level. Are still both considered “custom”? I guess that’s in the eye of the beholder and not intended to result in a topic that gets argued over. Regardless of the definition or meaning behind it, it's quite apparent everyone understands the concept so enough said smile

We do however, sincerely appreciate all the support at the Ice Show this past weekend… as we set record numbers across the board!!! Thanks again!
