Sportland_Bait
I have access to a field that the honkers were using tonight. Is it best to set up decoys there for a morning hunt or is it better to hunt the field in the afternoon?Jason
brittman
What time are they going out to feed ?I would be completely set up about 2 hours before the first flocks usually arrive into that field. Real cold weather usually delays the morning flight.
Sportland_Bait
I was only able to scout this field tonight. They were hitting the field about 4:00 pm. So I'm not sure about a morning flight. Jason
carpshooterdeluxe
I would set up for an evening shoot. If it is going to be cloudy, plan on the birds flying earlier, but otherwise if you saw them in the field by 4, I would be setup by 3 at the latest. We are still getting birds feeding 2 times a day here around town, but a lot of guys in MN are saying birds are only feeding 1 time a day. Maxxed Out
I would get out their early and make sure you hide disappears in the field. I"m assuming you are hunting layouts, spend the extra time on stubbling or digging in if you are in chisel plowed corn. If these geese truly want to be in this field and are going to come back your decoy arrangment isn't nearly as important as your hide. Musky Buck
For me what's the limit 3 ? I wouldn't bother with decoys even, in my area since Sept. 3rd they've been getting pass shot coming out of town a ton or field shot so they are very decoy shy, with 0 ducks around the goose takes 99% of the pressure, if you'd like to hunt the field more than once don't use decoys as you are picking them up the rest coming will search out a new haven after seeing you bumbling around, if you plan to just get 1 good hunt in then decoy but don't expect them to come in as a video would show, go get your 3 and be off, then the rest can feed there giving yourself another hunt. I also assume you are hunting alone and depends on how many flocks are going there. We tried this many times with great success plus 0 dekes to pick up, just carry your birds to your vehicle and watch the rest pile in there, we also have no singles or pairs at this time of year, always big flocks, if we saw over the last 20 years singles, pairs, small groups yes we would decoy then. Lots of variables though and I don't know how many are hitting your field or where you are located or what your past late goose experiences are. Either way, good luck out there. When they get locked on a field they'll come time and time again if food is plentiful enough and they don't get busted by someone close to your field blasting at them. Musky Buck
I see Nisswa so I'm guessing Mississippi river geese ? No snow really, snow hunts building a fort is so cool and having geese sail literally right over your head is crazy.

Sportland_Bait
Thanks for the advice. We ended up hunting one day. Two of us shot 3 and missed a couple of times. Should have been there a little earlier and had the blinds hidden better. But live and learn. Overall a pretty good hunt. But the birds are smart. We have left the fields alone for a few days and scouted a little. Skybusters on the neighbor fields aren't helping matters. Seems like one flight a day in the afternoon and about half the numbers. Unless a few are feeding at night? Hoping to get after again after the weekend.Jason Erlandson
