Not sure where you're looking, but W. ND's herd has takin a huge hit from the few rough winters....We have been wanting to do a Nat. Grasslands early bowhunt for a couple years, thinking I will wait a few more...

Not sure about the Eastern portion though.

Strat, I think your planning is smart. In spite of that I'm headed West next week to give it a go for three days. A quick trip, but it's the best I can do. Reports range from not very good to really, really bad out there this year. Some people I know who hunted out there this year went multiple days between deer sightings. Most of these people have hunted out there for a long time, so they aren't exactly rookies...

Honestly, many of the reports in Eastern and Central ND aren't too much better. Some people in some pockets had pretty good seasons (TylerS sounds like he saw plenty of deer), but most of us have struggled this year. It might not be a terrible idea to give it a year or two before you give this idea a shot.

The Sheyenne National Grasslands have some very good public land hunting, particularly for those who are willing to hoof it a mile or more off the roads. There's lots of good areas where you can't drive a vehicle, so thi produces some areas of low hunter volume, particularly during the bow season.

Looking to make the 15-16 hour ride to bowhunt whitetails on public land/PLOTS in ND. Anybody ever try it or do any good? Wanna point me in a general direction to look at?...so I don't waste my time!

What are you chasing? Whitetails? If so, I'd stay in eastern ND. If you are coming from the U.P. of MI, I'd stick to NE ND. If you haven't yet made final plans (which it doesn't sound like you have based on your questions of where to go), I'd consider saving my money this year and doing more research for future years. Being unprepared on an out of state hunt can be very frustrating, and this can be exagerated if you end up in a pocket where there low deer numbers.

I had planned on going to the Sheyenne a couple years ago, but didn'nt make it yet. I still plan on going so any reports if someone has or is going would be great for me too. Probably going to Iowa next year so I have time to think about it.

I have hunted the Sheyenne river and Sheyenne nat Grasslands for the past 25 years as an outstate hunter. We hunt land that abuts the Grasslands and we are in the so called Sheyenne river bottoms.

In those past 25 years, we have had very good archery and rifle hunting with some nice trophies taken.

In the past 3 years, the winters have been bad and last springs wet weather did maybe the worst damage to the whitetasil so the CO in our area explained to me.

So, I was serioulsy stay clear of the SE part of the state for a few years yet. The GnF has thier meetings going on now on what to do with this issue.

Personally myself, I am not going back next year as it is that poor.

Just got back from 3 days of pheasant hunting in central ND. Hunted hard with 12 birds for 3 guys. Only saw 6 hens in all of our walks, but still had a great time, lets hope there is not another hard winter. But we did see a couple of awesome bucks. Cattails, cattails, cattails. I'd still hunt cattail sloughs or set up in connecting tree lines or strips of red brush. We got within 30 yards of the 2 biggest and both were with a doe and looked to be rutting. Thinking about it myself! Good luck!!!

I'm from the Devils Lake region and go back alot due to my folks and relatives for hunting and fishing. Deer hunting was hard this fall the count is down statewide we hunted hard opening weekend got our two bucks but hit key areas. Normally there's deer everywhere but the only way to find them was to walk those key areas.

+1 on scoots post deer are definately down. Cross reference areas on plots/public land with satalite images(G-Earth) to give you an idea of what you will be hunting the 2D area has lots of heavy woods on public land if thats the type of area you want to hunt.

good luck

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
