I have used my fl-8se since 2005 and love the unit. I was just waiting for vex to come out with a unit that still had a 30ft setting and now a shallow water 10ft setting. I don't have a low power mode on the 8 just the s cable which works fine just a bummer if moving from shallow to deeper water,(having to remove it). Do you have a lot of hours on your 22 Jim?

Hamms,

I fished one as a proto-type and fished it hard all last season..

Here is one thing I really liked about the FL-22 last season - with the ability to have 10 foot scales, I think you are able to have a bit better view of what is being interperted on a flasher screen. Take this for example; when your in a situation with fish that are "sniffing", you can see a lot clearer when the fish are moving. With a bigger and clearer mark, because of a 10 foot screen, watching the colors of the mark move as the fish moves is much much easier. With experience, now you can know you have fish moving away from your bait and you may need to switch up your jig cadenance or color all together.

Just like in my open water screens, these little details in my flasher means a lot in catching fish or not catching fish, a lot of the time.

The 10 ft scale is the reason i went with the fl-8se also. I didnt see the point in having half the screen not in use when fishing curtain depths. I also like how vex has matched the pulses with depth settings on the 22. will help with shallow water in weeds. I really want to try this unit out! Thanks Jim

Using as much of your screen as possible is the point of a flasher. Exactly what I like about my fl-8se 10ft settings. The 22hd would be exactly what i have been waiting for. I also use my flasher in my boat so the bottom lock would be nice on the 22 vs the option I was going to go with the fl-20. I really want to try one of these units out. Thanks Jim

Hamms,

I picked one up towards the end of last season and it was a giant leap forward from my old FL-8SLT. Not that the old 8 didn't get the job done, the FL-22HD just gets it done a whole lot better. I also got a transom mount ducer for my boat and a couple pro-mounts to move it around easier.

The thing I love most about it is the 10 foot scale. I very often find myself in less than 10 feet of water when ice fishing and even fishing in the boat. Why would I want to only be able to select 0-20 for my first depth when I am in 7 feet of water? That is where that 10 foot screen really kicks it in the shorts. Last year, last ice trip out I was fishing 6 feet of weed CHOKED water. You had about 1 foot of mushy ice, 3 feet of solid weeds, and 2 feet of stalks at the bottom. The crappies and gills were hanging right at 2 feet off. Most flashers were choked out with weeds and could not mark the fish. Flip of a switch and I was on low power mode, completely cleared the weeds from my screen and saw nothing but fish. I put ten on the ice to every one that the others in my group caught cause I could see exactly where the fish were and was able to react to what the fish were doing.

Out in the boat, I did use it vertical jigging a couple of times and it did just as well there as on the ice. The bottom lock zoom was awesome for fishing in the boat. I just set it at 6 foot BL and across the lake I went. I have an old Garmin graph on the boat as well, and pretty much the only thing I used it for last year was water temp. I could read the Vexilar so much easier. Bottom content was way easier to interpret on the Vex as well.

If I were to get a second unit for my son or other friends to use, it would be another FL-22HD, no doubt in my mind. I also have no doubt that you would love the FL-22HD. Great unit.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
