Flies?

Anybody use flies under the ice for perch or other panfish? I used a homemade freshwater shrimp looking fly under a dropper last year for perch and it seemed to work fairly well. I'm thinking of making a few more this year. Wondering if anyone else has made or used their own flies under the ice?

Yes, they work well. I've been using scuds for a couple years now. I attach a small weight above the fly and twitch it. The fly moves kind of randomly and get strikes out of fish that otherwise weren't eating. It doesn't work all the time, but it's another tool in the box.

I use fly's while ice fishing and did you know you legally can have three artificial fly's on you line anytime you fishing!

I've only had success with scuds for some reason. I might try some midges this year, just to see what happens. It can be amazing to see the size fish that will eat a size 20 fly.

Is the rule still the same you can only fish with three flies if fishing for sufish, crappie, and trout? Last I checked perch weren't included.

I actually tried them last year for the 1st time, but rigged them up in a drop shot manner. The sinker set about a foot below the fly, very limited success, but still another bullet in the gun.

you are right. I just looked it up in the reg book. it is on page 9 under angling methods. it DOES NOT include perch.
