I use a quickfish 2 and i will never get or build a permanent ice fishing houses. there are five reasons i use a hub/flip-up ice shelter/bucket:

1. move around easyer.

2. dont have to be stuck in a house town on the ice.

3. chase the fish easyer.

4. catch more fish.

5. able to go where a perm cant.

hub/flip-up ice shelter/bucket 97%, permanent ice fishing houses 3% for catching fish.

Find the fish with the bucket and flipover method then hook onto fishhouse which takes about five mins drive to your spot furnace already started of course. Drill holes in tshirt drop down catch fish in climate controlled comfort watch a movie fry up some of your catch maybe have a few beverages. Repeat when fish move grin

It is much more comfortable to sleep in a perm house. On many lakes you're hog walleyes come in during the middle of the night while you're sleeping cozily in your bunk. Beign able to play cards, have a cocktail, relax on the bunk and take a mid day nap, etc are all reasons why people love their perms.

Ice fishing isn't 100% about catching fish. I use my porty 80% of the time but I love fishing out of the wheel house when it works out. (fish biting, ice thick enough, planning to spend the night, etc)

By the way - welcome back. I loved your posts last ice season.

When I started out ice fishing (at the age of 50) I just sat out on the ice all day in a heavy jacket and 3 pair of sweatpants. In 2006 (at the age of 60) I got my first flipover, which is a used Otter Lodge that has a broken zipper and numerous holes in it. I only used that half the time I was out there. In the last 2 years I have stayed in Perms a few times and love it. This year I bought a Yetti wheelhouse and plan on using it quite a bit this year if the weather cooperates. I will still use a small flipover and run and gun, but at the age of 65 comfort is important. As you get older your needs do change..... laugh

i can see your point. i just got the quickfish 2 last spring and 2 more ice fishing poles, plus i love hearing the wolves howel and the wind whiping by, plus all the wildlife you see. thanks, in the summer i am a Disc golfer and do some open water fishing (so i dont get on hso that often),but when it comes to ice fishing, full board head.

By the way - welcome back. I loved your posts last ice season.

i have the otter small sport sled, a hand ice auger, quickfish 2, 4 ice fishing poles, lures, ice fishing bib, showdown ice troller, a bucket, and 4 other important gear.

I still like using my flip house for finding fish and run and gun fishing, but even if I'm using the wheel house it will never stay put for more than an evening of fishing if I'm not catching fish. If you get to the point of wanting to take two or three kids and a wife fishing on the coldest of days you will see the usefullness of a wheel house. I might catch less fish than I used to with the full run and gun style, but the ones I watch my kids pull up give me twice the enjoyment.

Really like my 1-man flip house, but there is a time and place for the "big house".

I will at some time in my life own a wheel house, just now isn't the time.

We get to use some friends once in a while and we stay up at Appeldoorns in a big sleeper every year and there is nothing like the comforts of home while ice fishing.
