Snowblower impeller bearing question

Snowblower is a JD TRS26 which was initially purchased from the JD implement back around the mid 90's by my father.

When he upgraded to a larger one, I purchased it from him.

2 stage snowblowers are always loud, however I noticed it a little last year and even more so this past weekend when I went to "prep" it for this winter. (Should have thought about it more over the summer)

starts and runs perfect, however when I go to engage the auger system, it sounds almost like metal on metal...(I believe a lot louder than should be which I'll "ear test" this coming weekend with my father's JD when I head home) Definately is coming from the impeller and not the auger.

I am assuming the bearing going from the pulley into the impeller housing is probably shot. Doubt there is a real good way to "test" this without tearing it apart.

What kind of a project am I looking at if I decide to try and get into it? Either way it probably is due...if it is a project and a half, I'd like to get it in before the rush before the first snowfall.
