waterfowl reports

They are all over. Big ponds have the divers. We really got into the ring bills and Blue bills on the bigger ponds with fresh water shrimp. We had a ton of success on the potholes in the middle of the fields for big mallards, Gadwalls and red heads. We even picked up two Canvasbacks. We had the best trip of our lives last weekend and were definitly into some northern birds. We were a little east of Devils Lake. I am not a fan of "jumping" potholes, but we had so much success, I have a tough time arguing that it has a place in a afternoon hunt.

This time a year it can be very hit or miss. An area can be full of ducks and then they are gone. Especially true of the non mallard dabblers and many of the divers. You can be in an area where every slough is essentially void of birds. Drive 60 miles and the sloughs are full. Cool clear nights seem to drive migration when the wind prevails from the N and NW this time a year. Mallards and geese will hold on longer if they are not overly harassed.
