Problems with Fluorocarbon line in cold water??

Monday morning I broke my line 30 feet from the lure on a hook set. I was using 10 pound Seagar Abrazx Fluorocarbon line. The line is less than a month old. Rod was a 7'-2" medium power Cumara. I have never had this happen with a medium power rod before. Just wondering if the cold weather had anything to do with it??

Cold water had nothing to do with it.

-had you backlashed with that line recently? A backlash can kink and damage the line.

-had you been stuck and stretched the line hard recently?

-have you checked the rod to make sure any of the guides are not damaged?(run a q-tip through the guides and check for any sticking)

People ice fish with florocarbon, it was not the cooler water temps.

Hiya -

Fluoro can get harder to manage in cold weather as it can stiffen up (some brands are better than others in this regard) but as the others said, it was probably damage to the line. DD is right on that a kink from a backlash can be all it takes sometimes - learned that lesson the hard way. Pluses and minuses to fluoro, and this is one of the minuses.

Cheers,

RK

Friend of mine had the same thing happen with AbrazX 3 times this Spring. Each time the line broke far away from the lure. I think it was 12lb test. May just have been a nicked guide or something, but it didn't happen with any other line.

After trying several different brands over the past few years, I've stopped using fluorocarbon as a mainline. In my opinion the negatives outweigh the positives. I like fluorocarbon leader material though.

Cold is usually not an issue, but in no way was it anywhere cold enough to effect the line on Monday morning

Probably a bad spot in line, could been something you did or every now and then it happens off the spool, Seaguar is usually very good quality though
