crappies are a funny fish and sometimes imposible to locate.....I have fished a private lake and we search the lake all day from the 1ft deep to the deepest hole all around the lake and can't find a thing then comes dusk and there they are same spot they show up every year at the same times and then we can catch hundereds of them....

Yep, spend a lot of time fishing for them and while some days they make you look like a genius, other days can make you feel rather stupid. Absolutely have noticed bigger fish at low light periods, and hands down the biggest fish i have caught has been after dark. I suspect their ambush nature and ability to see well in low light makes dark a prime feeding time. Also think that the smaller ones will school up more for protection, as the slabzillas do not have as much predation. One thing you can do during the day is try to figure out where in the school the larger ones are and just concentrate on that area, I usually use a quite large search bait for this, but most often will take what the day gives and wait till dark for the real piggies. full-27018-13198-2011_10_10_22_30_21_531

this time of year can be a craps shoot! i always and always look for the deepest weedline or structure(exspecially wood!) my specialty is contour trolling and have alot of luck on baggin keeper slabs, my trolling set-ups consist of med-light action spinning rods with 6lb test mono. and the smallest cranks avail. small spinnerbaits and those bigger beetlespins also work wonders! if the trolling scene isnt panning out, i'll vertical jig structure, again off the weedline with some of my custom hand tied hair jigs in 1/32 down to 1/64 oz sizes!! small horsehead jigs tpped with a crappie minnow or fathead also work for me,the basics... use the norm. in stained water, the chatruse, orange, white .... bright colored jigs! the electric chicken color can be exspecially deadly! clear water... natural colore such as the blacks, browns, blues, silver, and such... gold and silver jigs can be applied to both situations in the right light!your water clarity will be the key here!! stained water slabs will bite better in the daylight and the clearwater... well... obviously, the night/eve bite is best! hope this helps!
