Tailgate latch

Recommended Posts

Yup, if you look up into the handle area you will see the part that moves the levers to unlatch the tailgate. You will also notice that part is seized on both sides where it pivots. A liberal application of SEAFOAM DEEP CREEP smile to that area and a little prying and working of the handle and it should be working like new. Otherwise the dealer will be more than happy to sell you a new one and they are pretty easy to install.

I think the trick to getting these loosened up again is to take the mechanism off the truck. Then when you put on Deep Creep, WD 40 or whatever, you can rotate the mechanism much farther than with it installed. 1. Take the plastic bezel off, 2. Unclip the plastic clips that attach the rods to the mechanism, 3. Take the rods off the mechanism. 4. Take off the 3 bolts on the inside of the tail gate. The mechanism will come out. Installation is the reverse. Be careful when installing the plastic bezel that you don't break the locking tabs. I do this about every two years now as preventive maintenance. I fixed a buddy's truck over a lunch break on a Rainy Lake fishing trip. It takes about 10-15 minutes. Has anyone tried to drill out the rivet or whatever you call it that holds the mechanism together? Then you could really sand and clean the surfaces. Then reassemble with a bolt and nylock nut. Would this work?
