1st Hunt of the year

Recommended Posts

Headed out early this morning to try a couple spots. Even with the full moon it was pretty tough to see. My eyes are killing me right now from the strain.

I drove around a bunch of spots to see which ones had picked beans in them and had a good wind for the setup. I wanted to try some spots that are harder to get to in the winter or for one reason or another just haven't had any luck.

I set up on the West side of a picked bean field with a corn field to the West and woods to the North and West. I started with some distress and soon saw a dark spot moving East along the South side of the woods. I had seen a deer out in the field earlier when I drove by and couldn't id the critter. I switched to distress and continued scanning to the South and when I panned back to the caller there was a coyote standing behind it. I tried to get the gun in position but just as I got him in the scope it took off. Then the dot in the scope was too bright so I shut it off. Then it was too dark to see the crosshairs so I turned it back on. What a mess. It must have met up with it's mate so after a while I let out a few howls and they answered back. I turned on the distress agian and soon saw them both behind the caller. Then off they went agian. I wish Mitch would have been there with his younger eyes. I'm sure with one guy scanning long distance with binocs and the other with naked eye things would have been different. Oh well, probably won't hunt agian for a month or so at that spot and I'll just call from a different spot so shouldn't be a big deal. Called one other spot and heard some howl back but nothing showed. Things will only get better. I'll keep you posted.

Archerysniper,

I was actually on your side of the river the other night. Probably South of where your talking.

Mitch and I are always looking to try some new spots. I don't think your too far from us anyway. Give me a PM if you want and we could take a look.

Thanks for the invite.

Rob
