Isn't it illegle to keep wild game for display?

No. Not fish at least.

If you lived on a lake and didn't need to do any transporting, you'd be perfectly within your legal rights to catch a game fish, bring it inside your home, and throw it in an aquarium.

In addition, you can purchase game fish species from licensed dealers (fish farms) and transport them for the purpose of home display.

Not to mention the small section that deals with under-16s bringing small fish of certain gamefish species home for aquarium display.. or the transport of "minnows". I myself have two bullheads, super easy to be legal since any <10''ers are "minnows" and can be transported as long as they did not come from infested water.

The definition of wild animals includes fish per the MN office of the revisor:

Subd. 55.Wild animals. "Wild animals" means all creatures, whether dead or alive, not human, wild by nature, endowed with sensation and power of voluntary motion, and includes mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, crustaceans, and mollusks.

This also from the office of the revisor:

Subd. 3.Taking, possessing, and transporting wild animals for certain purposes. (a) Except as provided in paragraph (B), special permits may be issued without a fee to take, possess, and transport wild animals as pets and for scientific, educational, rehabilitative, wildlife disease prevention and control, and exhibition purposes. The commissioner shall prescribe the conditions for taking, possessing, transporting, and disposing of the wild animals.

(B) A special permit may not be issued to take or possess wild or native deer for exhibition, propagation, or as pets.
