Where do they go when it gets sticky out?

Could someone please describe to me (us) the relationship between higher temps, thermocline formation and panfish locations as we move into the summer months?

Thanks!

As daytime temps climb and night time temps stay up there as well, the water has a tougher time shedding the heat, so it starts to heat deeper in the water column. As this deep heating drives the warm water down it comes in contact with the cooler deeper water and a line will form as a barrier between the two....this is the thermocline and with good lcr's you can literally see it. The therocline will show up as a "false" bottom reading....you will see bottom and then the real bottom. The false bottom will be less distinct. Your pannies will eventually be pushed into the deeper water for one of two reasons: thier comfort and the comfort of thier prey. If you can find fish on the lcr just above, at , or just below the thermocline they will most likely be you pannies. Remember that the water below the thermo will be far less well oxygenated. I maintain that the fish are not uncomfortable that we catch down deep... what they are preying on is more likely found there due to thier comfort range and or other requirements to thier existance. Here is a clue...something that I do, to find the deep fish: go to where you ice fish in mid to late winter...where you'd fish before the ice-out transition begins. I hope this helps some..

Good stuff Tom! smile.gif

I will add that in my experiences it seems Crappies are less suseptable to water temps in themselves after the spawn, and more responsive to oxygen levels.

As long as you have healthy green weeds, the Crappies will stick with them, mainly for two reasons. One, as Tom mentioned, is prey. This also relates to the other reason, and that is cover.

The weeds provide cover for the minnows and other forage types as well as for the Crappies to hide from sunlight and even predators (large Pike).

This is why alot of times you'll find on bright sunny days that the Crappies are hiding right in or tight to the weedlines, while in twighlight and overcast conditions, a good bite can often be had away from the weed edges and middle of open pockets.

Later on, as the weeds die off, the Crappies will move deep as Tom said, and suspend over the deeper, cool water.

The cover is not needed as much, as the fish school thicker, and light doesn't have the penetration as it does shallower with limited transparancy of the water, should it be a stained or tinted lake.

Here again, with changing weather conditions and times of day, Crappies location will change as well, but more often will be a difference in their postion in the water column meaning how far off the bototm you will see them suspend.

Good fishing

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
