updating for 15 hours???

My Windows 7 home premium desktop has been updating for 15 hours, since 5 this morning.

I need this computer to do payroll. What happens if I turn it off and reboot?

It's on step 3 of 5.

My laptop was frozen for a while during an update before. I just powered it down. When it came back up it asked if I wanted safe mode or not...i chose not. Then it started up and continued the update before booting into windows.

This has happened twice where it froze up on me during an early morning automatic update.

Hasn't happened in a few months now, but it should be fine to reboot.

Same here. Win 7 on a laptop and it hung at 60%. Even though it says not to turn off what option is there? Lol. Rebooted and it zipped through the update to completion without any troubles.

I had a laptop yesterday that said it was loading updates and the progress bar never moved in a half hour. Held the power button and re-booted and it started loading on the next try. The only time I will not mess with my computer is at shutdown or start-up when it is configuring updates. At those points it might very well mess with your registry.

All I will add to this is be very sure it is hung and not just slow. I have seen some very nasty things happen to windows systems when they were powered down during a major update.

I had a few laptops do this at work this week. There was a service pack that was released for Win7 and it's a beast. I let most of mine sit and they worked themselves out after 3 or 4 reboots, granted it took almost a whole day but all of them came back up eventually.

That service pack 1 is a tough cookie. Very sensitive! Almost to the point of backing up everything and installing Win 7's Service Pack 1 during a fresh install. When it was first released, users who had installed the 30+ different languages beforehand were running into major issues. Sure enough I was finding this out after a Win7 SP1 crash. The fix was simple and involved entering a command prompt from BIOS and manually editing the update downloads, but what a hassle. I believe they re-issued SP1 and this is no longer a concern, but it does take awhile.

When you get to the SP1 part during the install, I have noticed the amount of time involved varies from machine to machine.

Well, you were one of the rare and lucky ones. Look up the documentation on Win7 SP1 over at Technet. Not to mention all the other major PC sites.

I have windows 7 on my home laptop and we have a couple dozen windows 7 PCs and laptops where I work and we have not run into any issues with updates/service packs yet.

For the most part Windows 7 updates just fine. The concern I had encountered was thankfully fixed. I was using a pre-release SP1 download through Technet but for the first week or so the the final release did not include the needed Hotfix. I had to do some digging this morning for a Win7 machine I am repairing that has an update issue with Office 2010, so I dug into this along the way to provide some help for those who are having the freeze or hang issue.

Also I would suggest you to check in the update history if you are getting any error codes for the failed updates. If you get any errors, do provide us the same to assist you better. To check the recent updates installed on your computer.

View updates history -

a. Click Start, Settings and then control panel (all items view). Click on the Windows Update icon.

b. Click on view update history link.

c. To view the details of a single update select and right click on a listed windows update, then click on view details. Click Close when done.

Use the system update readiness tool –

Download the System Readiness Tool.The System Update Readiness Tool checks your computer and tries to resolve certain conditions that could interfere with the installation of updates or other software.Here is a link to download System Readiness Tool; you may do it according to the exact configuration of the computer:

Search Microsoft Support for Number: 947821

After you download and then run the System Update Readiness Tool, restart your computer. Then check if you are able to install the updates properly.

The Readiness Tool is a large download and you most likely have to run while physically logged "INTO" your hidden Win7 Admin account. They might have fixed this issue. I can explain if needed how to open and view your Win7 Admin log in if needed.

We have a copy of Windows 8 at school in the computer department for beta testing. We have not loaded it up yet.

Eh Jim! Just for us geeks here and to impress those guys over in your computer department, Google "Windows Developer Preview downloads". It's is a beta version and not a preview.

I would have had Win8 going this weekend but amazingly all my physical and virtual setups are tied up in Cloud related ventures at the moment. I should have Win8 going in the next week or so on something around here.

Wished I had time to at least look at it but not right now. We have been using VM player for our labs and it works pretty good for a free VM player.
