FYI to those using Navionics on their phone

DTro

Question

I recently had an issue with the receiver mic on my DroidX which not only resulted in my having to try a system reset to get it to work, but also exchange for a new phone.

Navionics stores all the data on the phone, which means all my spots are now gone. I don't know if there is a way to pull that info off your phone (I'm sure there is by rooting your phone or using Astro or something) but I would recommend trying to back up your markers if you can, because eventually you will have an issue with your phone, or you will upgrade for a new one and lose all your data.

This is from their site:

Q. Where does my user data get stored?

A. Wp, Routes, Track, Markers and Photos are stored in the phone. If you update your phone's OS, you will maintain your user data only if the update is an official update and not a Beta version.

Q. Is it possible to import/export user data such as waypoints, markers, tracks and routes with Navionics Mobile?

A. No. Currently it is not possible to import or export any user data. The only operation users can do is share user data via email/Facebook/Twitter on Google Earth or Google Maps.

Well in hindsight, I think I could've transferred them using my PC, but in this case it's too late as I was on the phone with Verizon and in order to get a new phone they required a system reset which essentially erases all personal data.

I just assumed that Navionics user data was stored on the SD card. Never assume....

Ive had that happen. There really should be a way to sync your Navionics app with your laptop. With everything being stored in the cloud you would think they could do something like that linked to a username....

I had another issue the other day. Roommate had the phone on the Mississippi and was pointing where to steer and out of no where we hit a sandbar. According to the app we were in 6 feet of water.

I guess that comes with learning the river by boat but it was still disappointing. We shouldn't have been relying on the app as much for direction...

oh yeah, I would NEVER drive by GPS on a river, too many variables. I'm guessing you must have been out of the main barge channel? When that happens, all bets are off.

At any rate, I would recommend trying to backup your points if at all possible.

Another fyi is that the lakes north app is not available at the moment due to something with the Canadian cartography. So if you factory reset your phone or get a new one the app will not be available for you to download. So if you have it keep it.

That's not entirely true, because I just got a new phone in the mail yesterday and re-downloaded the app just fine. That is how I found out my favorites (waypoints) were gone.

The way you do it is to go the market and hit "my apps". It remembers your apps and will download them. So while you might not be able to do a search for the app, it will be cached in the market under "my apps".

It is true that Navionics north is not available at the moment. I had to reset my phone and when I went to redownload this app it was not availabe in the market. It did show up in "my apps" but no download button. Here is the response I recieved this morning.

"Due to recent agreements with the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Navionics is currently conducting updates for Canadian cartography. This app is currently not available through the Android Market. We hope to have this coverage area available for download in the near future.

If you need any additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

Navionics Mobile Team

Maybe something stored on my sd card allowed it??

I recently bought the droid x2 and I'm new to the smartphones. Does this app show the lake and depths and the such kinda like a H2O so you can go to specific spots? Can you just request MN. lakes or does it include the canadian stuff too. How much is this app and is it under the navionics name? I was told by verizon associate that there are other apps that show topography of lakes, some are free and some charge a fee. Anyone look at other apps?

Technically I didn't reset my phone it was just easier to say that is what happened. What actually happened is I woke up one mornign and my phone said it had updated my software which was fine but all of my contacts were gone and none of my apps worked. Brought it into Verizon and they had no idea what happened but playing around with it found out if I removed the apps and redownloaded them they would work again. I removed Navionics thinking I could redownload it only to find that it didn't exist in the market any more. I did go to my apps and it showed I had Navionics North but there was no download button. Contacted Navionics and the above quote is the answer I recieved. I haven't even tried to download it latly as I really don't use the app too much as I have a H20 and in the boat I use my Humminbird. Guess this is a good reminder to try!

Those of you looking to get this app i was able to get it back but not thru the android market. it works exactly the same, it is exact.

I would love to know where you found it as well! I have the Marine-Central version but it doesn't have any lake information for lakes in the north half of the state.

For those that might not have heard.

Navionics has rolled out an entire new version of their mobile software and are no longer supporting the first version.

They have added a bunch of nice things such as pinch zoom and landscape support.

BUT...you have to purchase it as a separate app. Still not a bad deal for $10 or whatever, but I sure would have like to seen some sort of "upgrade" credit or something. Most likely I will just go ahead a buy the new version as I was really looking forward to having the pinch zoom feature.

What's to stop them into another purchase requirement for the third upgrade though?

I just e-mailed Navionics asking if there was an upgrade path. I will let you know what I hear. It is going to annoy me greatly if there is no credit for having bought the app early.

There is no upgrade path. Check out their Facebook page, there are many unhappy customers because of this.

Here's a recent email I received from them:

Thank you for your feedback. We appreceiate any user feedback. The older regional apps have been removed from the Android Market with the addition of the new Navionics Mobile single apps (ex. Marine & Lakes: USA). Please be aware that the older regional apps are no longer being supported, and will no longer receive updates.

The new Navionics Mobile single app is not an update to the previous regional apps, but an entirely new app product. This app will feature a much larger coverage area, updated chart data, as well as many new features. If you would like to continue to get the most updated information and features, we recommend upgrading to the single app, as the older regional apps will no longer receive updates.

Please be aware that it was not possible to add all of the new features with the older app, so a new app product had to be created. The new single app will require an additional purchase and can be obtained through the Android Market.

If you need additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

I don't think I would have been as angry if they kept the old app in the market and just not supported/update it, so the people who did buy it could re-install it if their phone crashed or whatever. But to completely remove it and require you to purchase another app with no hint of a discount is just insane.

Well, they claim it is in Google's hands and that as with any other app you should be able to re-download it. As others have attested to here, that is simply not the case. It's kind of hit or miss depending on your particular device.

I feel like those that purchased the original app were more like beta testers and should be offered some sort of upgrade discount.

Having said that I DO like the fact that you purchase a single app and have access to the entire US or US and Canada. I mean when you think about it, it's a great deal. But, I think they could have rolled it out to existing customers a little better.
