Stratosman
First I thought that I somehow had a coon in my corn, but I live in the middle of town, thought that was strange... had a few stalks pulled down and cobs eaten, but the closer I looked I noticed alot of cobs 1/2 eaten on the stalk as it stands... put out a live trap and got a few squirrels.. not surprising. I have never had anything eat on my corn in the past and didn't think that tree rats would eat wet corn...Any thoughts or ideas garden experts? Powerstroke
Well, no offense, but "middle of town in Hastings doesn't mean much. I live in Eden Prairie, work in Hopkins and grew up in North Minneapolis and everywhere I've ever been we've had coons. In the middle of N. Mpls they live in trees and in the storm sewers. I don't think there is any place in the cities that doesn't have coons. ANyway, I guess I've never thought about squirrels eating corn while on the plant, but I don't see why they wouldn't. That being said, I can almost guarantee there are coons around so it might be them afterall.
Big-Al
Your description of the damage sure does sound like it could be coons. They don't mind wandering into town at night.
Gordie
could be squirrels but I think they prefer hard corn over soft corn most likely coons Did you happen to notice any deer tracks at all? I've heard alot of reports of deer in gardens this year and most of them were in town or very close to it
Stratosman
My original thought was coons, but I doubt a coon would be able to climb a stalk and eat part of the cob without tearing the plant down.... I looked for deer tracks and didn't see anything, plus nothing else is getting eaten. That's why I keep going back to squirrels. Hate them dam things, time to set the "live" trap out again. leech~~
Squirrels do eat corn! I was setup on the edge of a corn field Bow hunting and all weekend I kept thinking I had Deer coming and looked over to just see squirrels eating the corn. Also at my feeders they are eating the corn!
