If you are going to plant anything more than a .5 acre, I would avoid buying seed at a sporting goods store. You'll get the same seed varieties at a much lower cost by buying the seed from an ag supply store (elevator, seed distributor, online source seed dealer, etc.). Decide what you want to plant, read the seed labels on the "buck on the bag seed" and compare for yourself. Use the money you have saved for fertilizer and you'll be way ahead of where you'd be with a "buck on the bag seed".

There is nothing wrong with the "buck on the bag" seed, its just that you will be paying a fair bit more simply because of the packaging, advertising, etc. So when you are planting more than a small plot, you might as well save the money.

There's a place down in central Iowa known as Welter Seed that we order a lot of stuff from...about to put in my annual order for turnips and rape. They are very reasonably priced and ship to your door in just a couple of days. They will mix seeds, whatever you want. Ship in a plain white bag, but same stuff with the fancy pictures and high price. If you google welter seed you'll find their HSOforum with a seed catalog, etc. Good luck.

It's way across town for you, but I go to the Hugo Feed Mill. They're friendly and definitely willing to take the time to help you out with your particular problem. They also handle soil testing if you want them to do that.

I don't know how well their prices compare to other places in the Cities, mostly because I was happy to find someplace like them nearby. I'm willing to pay a bit (And, like I said, they may not even charge any more than anyone else.) to help keep them in business.

Post,

I just got my late summer planting seed and early fall planting seed from Albert Lee seed company. They have a great on-line catalog and can ship it to you in a day or two. Do you know what you want for seed? What part of the state are you planting in? Couple of important questions simply because our planting windows are coming to roost. If you have questions about it I would be more than happy to talk to you about it. E-mail me at [email protected] and I can give you some direction so that you can be successful with your investment. It is time for me to pass on information that I have gotten from other food plotters.
