Mike Walerak
What type of application will you be doing?Livebait or plugs, rivers or lakes? An ounce for every 10 feet is a good rule of thumb, but you have to keep speed and lure size/type in consideration. When trolling livebait in rivers, I might use up to 6 ounces if I have to get down 20 or 30 feet in strong current. On lakes I will use 4 ounces most often to keep the cranks close to the bottom in 20-30 feet at 2-2.5 mph. When using live bait you can use lighter weights since the speeds are generally slower. One trick is to tie snap swivels on my droppers so the weight can be changed easily. The key is to keep the angle of the line from the rod tip to the water at 45 degrees or less. This is where the 3-way shines. The you know exactly where your bait is in relationship to the hungry walleyes. It takes a little time to figure out dropper and leader combinations but you will find it to be time well spent once a few fish are netted.mw[This message has been edited by Mike Walerak (edited 05-24-2004).][This message has been edited by Mike Walerak (edited 05-24-2004).]
