Opener rituals/Traditions

Recommended Posts

Just curious with opener only days away what is your traditions or rituals?
At our place it usually involves getting up way earlier than planned because I can't sleep and my wife saying something to the effect of "Idiots". Then going down stairs where the outdor channel comes on or a video while variouas versions of biscuits and gravy are concocted. Of course this leads to various discussions on how to prepare said menu leading to the accidental pots and pans being banged around which ends up with the wife and kids showing up. Then the excursion outside where there is at least another 15 minutes of discussion on the days events. Well as we depart with the temp colder inside the house by now we finally get the road under way. And it never fails that the cell rings at least hourly as the kids checkin to see how we're doing. Not much but we are looking forward to it. As the kids get older I am sure that our traditions will evolve and I know when the fish are cooked and the beer is cold the fire in pit roaring eventually my wife will thaw out. At least till next year.

Kind of similar-every year my wife gets all ornery that I'm going on my fishing trip where we drink and fart and don't shower much. She thinks its highly juvenile. You would think after 22 years she would have accepted it by now. But no, every year she has to try and make me feel bad for her because she is being left behind even though I have offered to take her with and even though she makes an annual trip to LasV with her girlfriends for her vacation. I have to say, just once I would like her to be happy for me to go on my trip and wish me lots of luck and good fishin'.

You can tell she doesn't like eating fish.

I see separate Retirements in our future.

For the same reason that I don't go out drinking on New Year's Eve, I avoid the walleye opener per se. I fish catch and release on Pool 2 of the Miss, or if I want to keep a fish or two, head down to Pool 4 starting in late February. If I do go out the day of the Minnesota opener, I'll head to the St. Croix (which will have been open for business for two weeks by then). Not very "traditional" I s'pose, but there are probably more than enough folks to take my place on that particular day.

Twinkies, sunflower seeds, and beer for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A weekend at the cabin with no women. Which sometimes doesn't work out so well since my mom's birthday is May 13 and falls on the opener on occasion, oh yeah...and that mother's day thing too. Oh well, I am sure she has always enjoyed the time away from the boys! The one opener the women were around we didn't catch a stinkin' thing! It is something my grandpa started and we have just continued with. We are usually pretty ripe by the end of the weekend so I think they are happy that they are not around.
GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND TO ALL!!!

Fishing opener? What's that? Oh yeah, that's the day I never go fishing. I figure let everybody else fight for a spot and I'll head out in a week or two when the pressure dies down and I can catch all the fish they scared away.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
