What is in the lake?

I fished a lake near Lindstrom last night. Lake was beautiful and had decent bass in it. I could not figure out the bottom of this lake. I didnt have a depth finder. When you look at the water, you can see a strong and thick layer of vegatation that looks like the bottom of the lake. If you used a worm or jig, it would sit on top of that layer. Then when I used my paddle to poke through it, that first layer would open up and it looked like it was clear or open under that thick vegetation. It almost seems like the bass were attacking from under that thick vegetation. I couldnt get a jig through that bottom. Looking at some points, it was sandy so I assume the thick vegetation was at least 12inches on top of the sandy bottom.

Am I just not percieving this correctly?

It looked like milfoil with some of that slimey green stuff that comes from fertilizer. The stuff was thick. Are there bass under that thick stuff? Do bass know how to hide under all of that? Its like they live two layers deep.

With warmer temps in the low 80's and alot of sun its safe to say that that layer of green you saw was most likely an algae bloom of some sort. I've seen the stuff thick and matted on the surface, so thick you cant cast a topwater over it as a fish couldn't see it from below, and you cant punch a hole through it to fish beneath. I've never seen it below the surface but I'm sure by your description it was some type of algae growing with, around, and on some other standing flora. Bass by the way will probably live around anytype of cover they can in an area that has prey and adequate 02.

The few bass that we did catch were all really really fat! I have never seen that many 2lbers with big stomachs.

Fever---its exactly like how you said it. My brother caught a 3lb 15ounce that literally attacked his frog from under all that thick stuff. It was crazy to see. There was literally nothing there, then BAM!!! a bass out of the forage.

Bassnut and Craigums...Oh, I hope the bass are big there. All were fat so far.

Thanks guys!

i've seen it this year to. It reminds me of the canned silly string we use to play with when we were kids. Its nasty to pick off the swivels of spinnerbaits. I'm sure the fish are there. I've seen big bass that I released disappear into patches of weeds in a foot of water. Those weeds are there territory. It's amazing how well they can hide.
