this time of year

It really depends on the system. You can catch fish doing a variety of tactics on a variety of different spots at this time of year. Weed lines can be good, flats with sand, gravel, rocks clam beds are good, reefs can be killer. My best piece of advice would be to do some searching with your sonar and see if you can find some nice archs and baitfish. Once you find them you can usually catch them pulling cranks(they are loving shad raps down here in iowa right now) or live bait rigs with crawlers or leeches. Good Luck.

Bass, really depends on the type of water you are fishing. If you stick to more of the classic walleye lakes like Mille lacs you will find fish both shallow and deep but have the luxury of fishing live bait rigs without being pecked to death by small panfish. I find that the fish start to transition from shallower haunts as the water temps rise into the low 60's. On my home lake of Forest Lake I find that there are fish shallow right up till the 4th of July and then I find them on the deeper edges of weedlines and out into the basin. Whether this is due to boat traffic or warming temps I don't know. There are always a handful of fish that stick shallow throughout the month of July but for better numbers I start working the deeper edges of the weedlines and out into the basin. Forest has alot of weed oriented fish. Mille lacs has fish that relate to shoreline rock reefs, deep gravel flats, and of course the famous mudflats, suspended fish that roam out over the featureless basin as well as a relatively untapped shallow weed bite. As a rule, I start shallow and work deeper untill I contact fish but shallow is relative to the body of water you are fishing on ie: Forest, I start my search in 6-9 feet and work out into 15-20, while Mille lacs I'd start my search in the 20'-24' range and work deeper. By this time of year, many of the fish will have transitioned to deeper structure so starting your search along outside weedlines and mid lake structure would be a good place to start but it really depends on the type of water you are fishing. The one nice thing is you can get an idea of where the fish are biting by the reports here on FM grin My best advice would be to go to a lake or river system that is known for the walleye fishing to tip the odds in your favor when your starting out. Sorry for the long winded reply, hope this helps you out.
