Mounting Plate

Got this trolling motor and mounting plate from a friend who never really used it and can't really explain to me how to put it on. I just want to make sure before I drill it onto my boat.

In the first picture, you'll notice that there is a little screw in the lower left corner of the plate. I would assume this is a safety catch to keep the motor from sliding off in case it becomes unscrewed.

There is one hole on the front of the motor and one on the back to insert the screw down to the plate. The second picture shows when the motor is lined up with the hole on the mounting plate, but obviously that won't work because the plate would be in the way of the deployed motor. Should I drill another hole in the plate so that the motor could be mounted like shown in the third picture? The fourth picture shows the motor when it is lined up with the back hole of the plate, but that saftey screw couldn't be used then (which doesn't seem really necessary anyways).

Thanks for any help

That looks sort of like the one I have. Mine is mounted on the bow plate and the motor deploys over the end. The piece with the grooves mounts to the boat and the piece that slides in mounts to the motor.

There was a thumbscrew and threads on the back of the flat piece. There is a pin through the groove to keep the plate from sliding too far forward. The thumbscrew pressed on the bottom plate to keep it from sliding. The plate inserted from the back.

That was for a MinnKota PD1. The end of the female plate, mounted to the boat, was more or less even with the edge of the bow plate.

From the pictures it looks like you have the plates swapped from the way I had them.

I hope this made sense and is of some help.

Go to the Minn Kota HSOforum, products tab, accessories, quick release brackets. click on the MKA-16-02, which is for Power Drive motors. A new page will open, and there is a tab for "support" on that page, with the instructions as a PDF. It doesn't look exactly like your photos, but the instructions should give you a pretty good idea how it mounts.

Did your friend ever use the plate with that trolling motor?

Since there's no cutout for the trolling motor (as you show in the mounted picture) I'm betting that plate is for a motorguide, where the entire assembly rotates down off the end of the trolling motor, vs the minkota that pivots within the housing.

You'd need to cut the notch for the trolling motor in order to make that plate work on that style trolling motor.
