Splake

Caught every other trout species, well not a tiger, and am having trouble with splake.

My first tought is just to get one through the ice. Is that the best way to get these guys? Do you need to get out on lakes that hold them, or can you successfully catch them from shore? Have tried early year casting and worms. Wish i could use minows but potentially ruining a lake and fine is not worth one fish.

my favorite method is off shore with nightcrawlers injected with air just enough so they float with a slip sinker. casting with spoons and spinners also work. may and june is the best time in the trout lakes in the arrowhead region. ice fishing for them is very productive as well. i use a jigging spoon with a waxie or gulp minnow head shallow near shore in less than 10 feet of water at that time. good luck.

i dont know if splake are stocked in the fall or not however rainbows in some lakes are stocked twice a year. once in the spring and once in the fall, the fall primarily for ice fishing season. splake just like rainbows have some that carry over into the spring season and that's quite common. those continue to grow for a period of time until they get caught as well. ice fishing for trout is getting more popular and the dnr is stocking in the fall to provide oppertunities for the angler. so it's not unusual to catch splake in the spring as well as rainbows. good luck.

The colder the water the better the splake seem to bite. Late season or within the first few weeks of the season. I have done better on splake in the winter then any other time of the year. Late fall we use slip bobbers and salted minnows. In the winter I use salted minnows and waxies.
