Baitcaster problems

Basscat

Recommended Posts

Today, while fishing, my reel caused me to lose a couple fish. It is a Quantam Energy PT (Not a cheap reel). When I set the hook, the spool would spin, so I titened up the drag until it was locked, and I can still easily pull line out with the reel engaged. I'm assuming it is the drag. Is it something that can be fixed?

Are you sure the spool is spinning? Braids have a tendency to slip on a baitcaster at times, you will have to pull out all the line and make sure either the original knot on the spool is tight enough or what a lot of folks do is after the knot is tied is to put a little piece of electrical tape on the spool and original loop of line to keep the line from slipping.

A little bit of mono backing can prevent slippage as well.

Duffman, you are exactly right! The line is spinning on the spool. I've been fishing braided line for a long time, and I have never had this happen. My knot must have somehow undid itself. I'm glad is was an easy fix. Thanks for the help!

No need for mono backing on spools with holes drilled in them, as long as you tie through the holes. And all Quantum Energys have them. Unless of course you need to take up some extra space if you don't want a full spool of braid.
