Wild edibles - classes or teachers?

Recommended Posts

Anyone out there offer classes or willing to share their knowledge of wild edibles? I am interested in the arrowhead and southeastern parts of the state.

I am already planning on harvesting (carefully) some wild parsnip.

A few years back I took it upon myself to learn some wild edibles. I suggest you grab a couple of books to start. They'll get you pointed in the right direction. When you do think you have found something, double and triple check to make sure it is safe. The interweb is a pretty good place to get lots of info, too.

With mushrooms I was never sure enough on my own to try very many. So, joining the MMS (Minnesota Mycology Society) helped by having very experienced shroomers share their knowledge with me first hand on group forays. I'm no longer a member, but learned a bunch through MMS.

Sorry, wild parsnip never interested me. I never looked for it and have no clue off of the top of my head what it even looks like. (Don't some Three Rivers Parks have signs warning of the dangers of the stuff?)

if you spend a lot of time out and about.. i would get familiar with it.. can be quite nasty... the sap causes a burning reaction when in the presence of sunlight..

I have been reading a good book on the subject. It gave me some good pointers (be absolutely sure what you're eating)

I am used to avoiding parsnip as I sometimes trout fish. I never had any idea it was edible (it's the same stuff as you'd find at the farmers market)

I can't wait to be able to ID good berries and find them.
